  • Newly diagnosed, panting

I have only been doing this two days. Every time I give a shot my dog pants rapidly for hours. No other signs of distress just the rapid breathing. Calms down by afternoon, but back again after evening shot. I don't dare leave the house, I don't dare sleep. This guy and his siblings are my babies. I just want to cry all the time. Is this normal for the dog. I will call my vet tomorrow and he has his first curve on friday.

Did you dog's diet change when you started giving insulin?

Panting is one of those mysteries... you know something is going on with them but not what.

A few possibilities I've seen before - a large rise in blood sugar (from the meal), a large drop in blood sugar (from the insulin), something in a new diet or a medication is bothering them.

In our case, for example, post-meal/injection panting turned out to be a response to a fish oil supplement. We took him off all supplements and meds and added them back in one at a time and quickly discovered the fish oil supplement was the culprit. It was surprising because he had taken it before a few years before that with no problem. But it was easy to demonstrate - panting with, no panting without. So we found another fish oil supplement.

Are you testing your dog's blood sugar at home?

That would tell you whether there is a big change in blood sugar that might be uncomfortable.
