  • Poll: How long has your dog lived with diabetes so far?

Please vote with your dog's number of years living with diabetes so far. And for those of us whose diabetic dogs have passed on, please post how long they lived with diabetes.

You can vote more than once if you've had more than one diabetic dog, as some of you have!

Bumping this up. Remember, new members, that many people whose dogs had or have had diabetes for years are not active here (some have passed on from other things, including essentially old age). The active members are skewed towards new diagnoses.

What i find uplifting is the high percentage of dogs living 3 to 4 years . I understand its not very scientific because people come and go but i think the trend at least since i have been here is for diabetic dog living longer . Now the pole doesnt say if they live better but from reading posts it appears to be that way

Another factor is there seems to be a substantial benefit for a caretaker to be quite involved in the management of the disease and appear they are very open to that which may have been frowned upon just a short time ago

I will probably create a new poll in June but wanted to bring this one forward for anyone who has not yet responded.

Noticing the increase in new diagnoses of D.M, I hope the DVM groups are taking this more seriously..Geez!!!

Re: Poll: How long has your dog lived with diabetes so far?

This poll naturally skews toward new diagnoses because members whose dogs were diagnosed many years ago often aren't actively here at the forum to fill it out when it's updated while new members are very active.

Unfortunately, I can't "restart" it and adjust the votes so each new poll starts out empty and depends on longtime members to respond.

But it does give you an idea of how long dogs actually live with diabetes versus the conventional wisdom that it's "two years on average" - it may very well be two years on average but that is because most dogs who develop diabetes do so when they're seniors.

What we've seen is that dogs with diabetes that's reasonably well managed live a normal life span. So a dog diagnosed at six or seven can live seven, eight, nine years after being diagnosed.
