Hi, I've just started using the Autoject 2 (since 1/4/17) and my Rotty was diagnosed on 12/22. I was hoping to get some thoughts on the straight in injection method as I've been injecting into the neck scruff but he doesn't seem to be regulating? It's at about 7mm depth and he is on 13 IU of Vetsulin 2x per day. About 115 lbs. Any thoughts after appreciated!

Re: Autoject 2
Welcome to the forum.
Don't know of anyone using the Autoject, but guess it should work. More than likely you are not at the proper dosage yet. 13 units is pretty small for such a large pup. Some say a starting dosage is 0.2 units per pound of body weight, so they would have started at 23 units. Of course every dog is different, but just as an example, my 18 pounder is getting 9 units of Novolin-N (generally reacts similar to Vetsulin).
Are you home blood testing? Could you post recent blood glucose readings? When are you / vet planning to evaluate / adjust the current dosage? Many would evaluate / adjust weekly. Sadly, this frequently takes time to regulate.
CraigAnnie was an 18 pound Lhasa Apso that crossed the rainbow bridge on 10-5-17. She was nearly 17 years old and diabetic for 9½ years.

Re: Autoject 2
Thanks for the info, vet did say starting dose is low to be safe. I had messed up about 6 injections between 12/25 and 1/5 so I'm assuming that would make a difference. Been good since. It's tough with my pup as he needs to be sedated every vet trip, I think it's very hard on him so only had one fructosimine test on 1/5. His numbers went up from initial testing in December. I'll get him back in most likely next week, I'll ask the vet if they are comfortable with drawing blood while he is double muzzled. I do not home test, any thoughts on best practices there would be much appreciated!
I feed Royal Canin Glycobalance however not sure if it's the best food out there? Spendy stuff and I also usually supplement with hard boiled eggs or lean plain ground turkey. I use Smuckers natural peanut butter (spoonful) as a treat after each injection. Only ingredients are peanuts and >1% sea salt. I walk him about 45 minutes each day so I think excersize is good. Thanks again for your thoughts I will make sure my boy gets regulated and healthy.

Re: Autoject 2
yes home testing would benefit a dog who struggles with vet visits
its difficult to make dose adjustments with just a fructosamine , a single blood sugar test and just physical symptoms
complete curves are still the top dog . i can understand your vet being conservative on dosing with the limited testing
home testing would be the best approach for your pup testing at home under a calmer normal environment
i use jesse inner lip above the canine tooth doesnt feel a thing and gives me a kiss after . lots of vidios on that
you can do some practice tests by rolling up the lip and maybe rub the saliva with a napkin . you cam also practice with something that can represent a lancing device like a pen without the ink just the containor or something like that . What you look for is just getting comfortable with both you and the pupJesse-26 lbs - 16.5 years old ,11 years diabetic, one meal a day homemade and a vitabone snack . 3 shots of Novolin( under the Relion name ) a day . Total insulin for a 24 hour period is 6.5 units of NPH insulin .
