  • Ocu-Glo Revisiting Discussion

    Hi All,

So, a while back I was a bit neurotic about Judes eyes and possibility of cataracts. We are now closing in on 2 years since diagnosis. I have had the little guy on Ocu-Glo for a little less than a year and a half. Soon after being diagnosed I saw greying in the eyes, vet confirmed its natural aging. He just went for another visit, his eyes have not gotten any better or worse. I wanted to revisit this topic, the product has been out a while. I am curious if anyone has had success? Is this product working, is it inconclusive? My vet and a specialist I saw for his hypothyroid issue both said "it wouldn't hurt, but don't know if it will help". The specialist 8 months ago said, he doesnt know why some dogs do/don't develop cataracts. Some breeds have thicker lenses, could be shape of the eye, but he was impressed with his eyes at the time.

Do we need a poll of sorts? I am going to continue my little guy on the pills, I wanted to see if I was alone in using this stuff.

As a side note, despite the fact it does have traces of corn and other carb based ingredients. It does not appear to have affected his numbers at all.
Jude: Rat Terrier, Doxie, Chihuahua Mix // Born ~4/2009 // Diagnosed at 6 yrs with diabetes // 23.5lbs // Ocu-Glo 1x's Daily // Hypothyroid diagnosed at 7 years, 0.2 mg Levothyroxine 2X's Daily. Diagnosed with IBD at 15 years old, attempting to re-regulate on Purina Hydrolyzed Vegetarian Dry Food (2 Tablespoons Canned Pumpkin for Stool Issues).

One of our members reported being told that dogs who develop nuclear sclerosis - the age-related hazing of the lenses you describe - have less of a tendency to develop cataracts - related as I recall to increasing density in the lens from the sclerosis. I have never had time to research this.

The concerns raised, by me and others, about Ocu-glo over the years is that they claimed they could reverse existing cataracts, which is not true. With diabetes-induced cataracts, the lens structure is breaking down and no drop can put it back together again.

Whether drops like Ocu-glo can prevent cataract development I believe is still an open question.

In that regard, I'm of the opinion that so long as the cost of Ocu-glo doesn't mean failing to take care of other medical conditions that need attention - since Ocu-glo is fairly expensive - then there's no harm in trying them to prevent cataracts from developing in the first place.

There's some good information on diabetes-induced cataracts here:

That is a very interesting theory, I did not come across the correlation between nuclear sclerosis and cataracts in my journeys. Interesting given the fact most pups start to show nuclear sclerosis around 6-7, additionally most have their diabetes diagnosed around same age, and cataracts begin somewhere in the same neighborhood of 1-2 years post diagnosis. Not sure of my point here, but it feels like they go down one road or the other.

Thanks for the read, I checked it out and turns out I did stumble on that article some time ago. I tried to find an article on breeds with thicker lenses, I think its good to know which canines have a higher propensity to develop cataracts.

I agree about the medical bills, I would never put off larger more pressing matters off financially in favor of ocu-glo. I shop deals when I can, been lucky enough to find bottles at a hefty $60 a bottle. Its not cheap, and its a shame considering the ingredients are nothing special.

Oh and on another note, I did see an article a year ago regarding true medication that could eliminate, prevent or halt cataracts depending on their stage. I have to look into that again, but it was in trials.

Alright, I'm done beating this dead horse.

That's Kino-stat. Not sure where it's development is at present.

Our Chris did not have nuclear sclerosis. But our dog now, Jack, at 9.5-10 years of age, is showing a bit of it. He's a border collie. Chris was an incredible mixed up child of major mutts.

I'm kind of frustrated by the Kinostat. Their website says that it isn't available yet, and the earliest it seem to possibly be available is at the end of this year. That could well be too late for us. (Trials for this drug seem to have been going on several years ago, so I have no idea why getting it on the market is taking so long).

it would be nice to do a poll on cataracts or no cataracts maybe there is some correlation that may stand out why some do and some dont

my jesse has been diabetic for 7 years and does not have cataracts ( knock on wood ) the only thing that is maybe different from most is she is on a homemade partially raw diet but hat doesnt mean much with just one dog as jesse has a unique diet and routine

another thing as a beagle she has quite a bit of tear production so maybe just physically moisturizing the eyes or flushing them out may make a difference

there has to be a reason why and its maybe something simple because there hasnt been a study of dogs that haven't gotten them maybe a pole here could be helpful
Jesse-26 lbs - 16.5 years old ,11 years diabetic, one meal a day homemade and a vitabone snack . 3 shots of Novolin( under the Relion name ) a day . Total insulin for a 24 hour period is 6.5 units of NPH insulin .

Kinostat is currently not available for sale. We are in the process of filing paperwork required for FDA approval which is estimated to be near the end of 2017. Thank you for your interest in our product.

              Thank you,

I remember reading about this a few years ago.

Just went by their website and there's been no news put out since 2012. Dunno what's going on.

Thank you for your interest in Kinostat. We are currently finishing up our clinical trial which should be completed in the next couple of months. After which we will have to supply our information from the study to the FDA and hopefully get their approval.

Please let me know if you have further questions.

              Thank you,
              Karen

What is the status of this study, as well as the FDA approval you were seeking?

Your company has not issued any news items in almost 3 years.
