  • back leg shaking..diabetes related or no?

Hello I am brand new here. My little coonhound(14yrs) was diagnosed with diabetes last nov. I have so many questions, so happy I found you guys(girls) to talk to. Question one: my little hound's back leg shakes when he is laying down and it seems to be uncomfortable for him. His back leg shook a little before his diagnosis but it's really bad now. My vet says not to worry and put him on neurontin. I just wonder if this is related to diabetes or should I investigate further. Also, He cries when his sugar is high..is that common?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

My Lily experienced back leg weakness when she was first diagnosed with diabetes, but it went away the closer her BG got to regulation.

Let us know more about your little coonhound. Name, Weight, insulin type and dose. Do you home test.
Lily is a 62 lb English Setter, born 07-27-2007.
    Diabetes: Aug 2013

When sugar is high, it makes you have to pee more, so maybe it is causing discomfort due to a minor kidney or bladder infection. Blood test for organ function and enzyme levels.
Riley, 8 yr. old maltipoo, 25 lbs., diagnosed Feb 2017, taking thyroid meds, had pancreatitis and DKA mid March, eating Wellness Senior formula can food. NPH dosage now at 9.0 units Humulin N. Adding either pumpkin, spinach, blueberries, yams, or green beans to his food. Also omega-3 oil.

Re: back leg shaking..diabetes related or no?

          Hello and welcome

In the early days after his diagnosis our dog had very bad diabetic neuropathy in his legs so that they became very weak and he could barely stand up or walk.

I do not remember ever noticing the sort of shaking that you describe so, based solely on our experience, I would guess it's probably not diabetic neuropathy but something else.

Hope you can find out what is going on.
