  • New here: need advice on autoject2 for vetsulin

    Hello everyone,
My dog was recently diagnosed about 2 months ago placed on diabetic diet and vetsulin twice a day. He was fine with his shots at first but is now starting to run away before shot time I've read about autoject2 and I'm convinced that I should probably try it; however, I'm not sure what type of needle to get since right now I am using u-40 syringes 29gauge, 1/2cc, 1/2 inch to administer his current dose. Do insulin pen needles come in u-40 dosage? Please advise.

Hi, I can't help you with the autoject question, but I have a few other suggestions. One is to find a very yummy, but chewy treat that takes a while to chew. I found some dried chicken breasts, and break off a piece about 1.5 inches long (that is big for my 22 pound dog). It takes him time to eat it and I can get the whole injection done during that time. He loves the treat so much that he is willing to put up with the shot.

We have been putting our dog on a towel on top of a table, and having him lie down for his treat/shot. This prevents him from trying to move (which was making things worse for him).

Another suggestion would be to use a smaller needle. Let me know if you want more information on this as there is a bit of a mathematical aspect to it. It made a big difference for our dog.

How big is your dog, and how many units are you giving per injection now?

        Vetsulin makes a vetpen:

        From their website:

        Vetsulin VetPen Insulin Cartridges

Vetsulin is a porcine insulin that is commonly used in the treatment of diabetes. Insulin is a hormone that is naturally produced by the pancreas that converts sugar (glucose) to energy. Diabetes occurs when the body does not produce insulin or is unable to use insulin properly. If you pet has been diagnosed with diabetes, your veterinarian may prescribe an insulin therapy such as vetsulin. Insulin is commonly given by subcutaneous injections (under the skin). This vetsulin is contained within a cartridge that is designed exclusively for use in the VetPen. The VetPen is an automatic insulin delivery device that features a dial for dosing and replaceable needles. Consult with your pet’s veterinarian before administering this product and follow their specific guidelines for use. This product is sold in a pack of 10 x 2.7mL vials that are measured 40 units/ml (U-40). For use only with VetPen.
