Gus was put on a round of antibiotics as precaution of a little cyst that had burst and the vet was afraid it might be infected. It is healing and looks good, however, his BG levels have been higher since starting the pills this week. But, I had decreased his insulin by .5 units 9 days ago (7 days prior to the antibiotic). So, it has me wondering the cause of higher reading for him. Just curious on your thoughts. I have raised his insulin back .5 to what he was on 2 weeks ago.

Re: Amoxicillin raise BG??
My dog just started an antibiotic for a trachea/throat virus (like kennel cough.) Vet assured me the drug wouldn't affect BG. So far so good.Riley, 8 yr. old maltipoo, 25 lbs., diagnosed Feb 2017, taking thyroid meds, had pancreatitis and DKA mid March, eating Wellness Senior formula can food. NPH dosage now at 9.0 units Humulin N. Adding either pumpkin, spinach, blueberries, yams, or green beans to his food. Also omega-3 oil.

Re: Amoxicillin raise BG??
Many members have seen higher blood sugar with antibiotics but since they are typically given for an infection,it is hard to say if it was meds or the infection. Maggie, who always had to be opposite of the norm, had one antibiotic that she went dangerously low on and caused her to throw up and pass blood. We never used that one again - in fact, the vet wrote in big red letters on her file not to give her it or rimadyl.Maggie - 15 1/2 y/o JRT diagnosed 9/2007, Angel status on 6/20/16. Her mantra was never give up but her body couldn't keep up with her spirit. Someday, baby.......

Izzy has been on antibiotics frequently in the past year for recurring UTI's and then again for a esophagus problem. The infections increased her blood sugar levels but once the antibiotics started working to treat the infection, her blood sugar droppedIzzy's Mom - 11 years old, 24 pounds, diabetic since May, 2016, 12 units Humulin N every 12 hours; 1/2 cup Blue prescription k/s three times a day and a regular grain free greenie after dinner
