  • Emergency corn syrup solution

When Scooter was first diagnosed last year my vet gave me a syringe with no needle and told me to use this to get corn syrup into his mouth in the event of a low blood sugar event.

Have you ever tried to pour thick corn syrup into a syringe?

Picked up one of these condiment dispensers at Bed Bath yesterday. Poured the bottle of syrup in there. Now, I can just grab the bottle and administer some syrup immediately, with no mess all over me and the kitchen counter.

    good idea

i use honey and it comes in a similar container that you can just squirt it out

back in jesses early days when she received a dose that was to much for her at the time i gave her spoonfuls of karo and she was a sticky mess .

I remember Patty just giving sugar water when she accidentally got Allie too low. My Jenny loved corn syrup so she would just lick it off my fingers
Jenny: 6/6/2000 - 11/10/2014 She lived with diabetes and cushings for 3 1/2 years. She was one of a kind and we miss her.

Honey might be a bit too thick to use if your dog is getting too low... Might get caught in his/her throat and possibly lead to choking.

we have used it when jesse licked it off a spoon or i rubbed it on he inner lips and gums . in that case it was better to have something a bit thicker sticking to my fingers

now given anything to an unresponsive dog as far as trying to pour it down there throat can result in choking so in most cases if at home your only choice is to rub on the inner lips and gums and having something a bit thicker maybe more helpful with that technique . this is the method we used when Jesse had an epileptic seizure not knowing if it was low sugar or just epilepsy

must be careful of the mouth during a seizure as the mouth can lock up on you

i have used both honey and karo and my thought is karo gets in the system faster . honey is a bit slower but its staying power seems a bit longer

our preference at this time is honey . if her sugar is a bit low i will squirt some honey on a mini biscuit and in that situation its better to have something a bit thicker to stick to the biscuit

I had to deal with one hypo episode early on with Otis and grabbed the jar of Karo, stuck 2 fingers in it and rubbed it all over his gums. Worked like a charm, ... he was on his feet in a moment and in a short while he was eating some more normal food.

I would have had no idea what we were dealing with, much less how to deal with it if it weren't for this forum.

You all probably know this already but I got a great idea on FB fro m Diabetic dog owners when asking, "Unlike cats, I can't think of a small non-perishable "food" that I could keep at bedside instead of first resorting to honey or karo. " The food issue was not answered but I loved the following: "You can get PACKETS OF HONEY at some fast food places." including Starbucks..Wow, I would never have thought of this!!!

                  Re: Emergency corn syrup solution

Hi, I read your baby's history that you administer 3 injections of NPH each day. If I have to return to NPH, I think that I will have to do something different since NPH did not last long enough for Suzie. Is there a written protocol on how one carries out this type of treatment plan? Great idea about the honey packets!!!!!

for jesse the reason we split her dinner dose is because she dropped after shot and food and spike later so the splitting of her dose at dinner time helped with that . she doesnt drop anymore after shot and dinner but for jesse it appears i can only give her a certain amount. to much and she spikes so i kept the split dose
