  • Newly diagnosed, concerned about diet

My dog is newly diagnosed and I have been reading everything, most including my Vet suggest feeding 2x day with a shot at each meal. I am nervous about even giving a snack, and my poor baby is hungry all the time. Currently I am using w/d but she had been on Acana Singles with some added home cooking. I have also discovered most Vets are not experienced in Dog Diabetes, due to the fact so many people put their dogs down, due to money, and also inconvience to their lifestye. too regimented .

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Tell us a little more about your dog... name, breed, age, weight, insulin type and number of units.

Diabetes in dogs is very manageable and with patience you can give your dog a healthy, happy life.

She is a rescued 6-7 year old Chiwinni, that I have had for 5 years, her name is CiCi, she weighs 12.75 lb, down from 16 in November, was in Ketone Acidosis before any symptoms, weight loss was not considered since whe was on a weight loss plan. Went from the Vet straigh to the ER, this past Saturday was a week ago, got her home the following Tuesday. The Vet has her on NPH 2units 2x day. Also W/D due to having what looked like a hypo episode with shaking and rocking, but BG was tested in 400 range. I gave her food asap an drove to Vet. I had her on Acana Singles, with some added veggies, and some ground round topper, before she wa diagnoised. I also have her sister and nephew.

hopefully you guys will be able to get into a routine. The being home every 12 hours was hard for us but my mother in law pinch hit when we needed her to

I was obsessing over everything in the beginning. Looking for the perfect food, etc. Finally my husband told me just to relax and we did.

My Jenny had many issues but we lowered our goals to not killing her and trying to keep her happy. If she was happy and enjoying her walks, we tried not to sweat the rest.

hang in there. We made it 3 1/2 years with our girl and it wasn't diabetes or cushings that killed her specifically. Her little body was just giving out.

Jenny: 6/6/2000 - 11/10/2014 She lived with diabetes and cushings for 3 1/2 years. She was one of a kind and we miss her.

2 units is a good starting dose for her weight. Does your vet have a plan for getting her regulated? The standard process is to stay on the current dose for 5 to 7 days, do a 12 hour curve, evaluate the curve, then if necessary, increase insulin by .5 to 1 units. Then you keep repeating the process until her BG is between 150 to 250 for most of the day.

                Have you considered Home testing?

As long as she’s eating the W/D, I’d stay with it. Many diets will work, but it’s important to stick with food that is moderate in protein, low fat and contains fiber. The low fat will reduce the chance of pancreatitis.
