  • Re: Simplicef and diabetes issues

Interesting. I have used simplicef twice with Snickers and have had no adverse effects. I have to request it (my vet defaults to less expensive options) but Snickers is the devil when it comes to taking pills. She has been known to pretend to swallow, hide the pill and then spit it out in a corner when no one is looking. The small once a day option of simplicef is a game changer for us.

The "every dog is different" mantra holds true again.
Snickers was an 18 year old Skye terrier mix. - Diagnosed 12-1-15. Angel status 4-21-19. She was a once in a lifetime dog that will always be in my heart.

    • Scooter's cataract

Prior to Scooter being diagnosed with diabetes last September, he had the early makings of a cataract in his left eye. That has since developed into a much larger cataract to where it appears to be affecting his entire eye. He also has a much smaller one in his right eye.

As most of you know, cataracts are a possible side affect of dogs developing diabetes especially if their BC levels remain unchecked running above 250 for most of the day. While I have worked hard to keep Scooter well below 250 most of the time, his already having the early makings of one put him at much higher risk of developing a full blown cataract.

      So, now it is here.

We have talked about the Can-C eye drops before on this forum with most responders leaning towards it being mere snake oil. I've known of these drops for many years and thought of using them for myself when I was told I had early cataracts. So far, my eyesight is still fine, so I did not pursued it.

Now, however, I have begun using them with Scooter, in both eyes twice a day. There are copycat versions that do not work. I was careful to buy the original patented product. I am also putting him on Twintab OcuGuard Plus, an oral supplement once a day. There is some evidence the two pronged approach causes the drops to work that much faster.

It can take weeks to months to see any improvement. I plan to stay with this and I will update you all on his progress.

      Wish us luck.

I think the problem with cataracts is once the lense is damaged you cant bring it back . I am in the camp if you can keep lens moistened and thats what you maybe doing that could slow down the damage and may lengthen sight but nobody knows for sure

the product has been around a long time . My thought is if it does no harm than its ok to use

Keeping fingers crossed and please keep us updated! My dog is also developing cataracts. It started to happen within 3 weeks of her showing symptoms and 1 week after diagnosis. I’ve been using ocluvet drops for the past week+. My vet mentioned them but said he had no evidence (even anecdotal) whether they worked. I have no expectations, but like you I’m willing to try anything.

              Good luck Scooter x

Our dog had a heart condition which meant she could not have the cataract operation and could not afford it if she could. In the last 8 months of her life before she sadly passed away her vision improved with ethosheaven bright eyes cataract eye drops and a diet change.
One cataract really reduced as she was able to see us and move around the house more clearly. The other was too advanced.

              We love our dogs x

I wanted to provide an update on Scooter's progress to this point. It has been about six weeks since my starting the Can C drops. Frankly, I have seen little change thus far. I've used the drops religiously twice a day right after his meals. One drop in each eye, wait about ten minutes, then another drop.

Over the weekend I learned about a completely new product from a company called Lanomax. Tested on dogs with reportedly very good results. I have some on order and will make the switch when they arrive.

One of the questions/issues I had with the Can C drops was whether, in fact, the product actually penetrated the eye to get to the lens. No easy feat when you think about it. Lanomax claims to have developed a delivery system than can do this. From Lanomax customer service,"Lanomax® uses an innovative drug delivery system built using the latest advanced nanotechnology, called ThruDelivery™, to deliver lanosterol molecules into the crystalline lens of the eye without an injection. This system separates the lanosterol molecules from the carriers in the carrier-lanosterol complex attached to the corneal surface, and then quickly passes them through the cornea, anterior, iris and pupil to deliver them into the crystalline lens. It is because of this ThruDelivery™ system that Lanomax® is the only eye drop on the planet to show a real therapeutic effect on cataracts."

We shall see. Maybe I'm wasting my money, but I cannot just sit and do nothing.

Btw: you can only order these drops from Lanomax.com. While there are similar looking drops on Amazon for less $$ they are not the same, according to an email reply I received asking about this.

Well the science in how they say there drug works seems plausible but with any of these claims its difficult to establish if they work

I had a friend who is kind of like a medicine women and she made a concoction for her dogs cataracts . something with cayenne pepper and said it work to clear the dogs young cataracts . I can say when i saw hidie her eyes were clear and the doc gave her a thumbs up . That made little sense to me but thats what she claimed and have no reason to say she was telling me a story

So maybe somethings can work. Jesse kept her sight the hole time and she is an old girl now so something is unusual with her . Maybe something in her homemade diet has some affect . Wish i knew

Hope scooter gets some benefit from the drops

                  • Re: Scooter's cataract

Asked Scooter's internist about these new Lanomax drops. He says they do work in some cases. His information is they have a harder time with cataracts due to diabetes.

In to week four and, while there has been little obvious change, when I check his eyes, I can say they for certain have not gotten any worse. Scooter can still see and get around with only marginal issues. Has a harder time with things close up. Like when we get to the screen door. He's not sure which way to go. Out for a walk and he goes along pretty well.

No issues navigating around the house, even at night. I have placed several outlet-type night lights to help him out.

There is a great YouTube video on training blind dogs using sound. Scooter's hearing is not so great so that will not be an option. Still giving him several vits and nutrients, as well. Things like C, E, Billberry, Lutein.

I'm staying with this plan. If it even just holds what he has now it's worth the time and cost to keep him happy.

Any updates on Scooter and the drops? I just ordered them today, really don't think fogel is a good candidate for surgery... (heart murmur, Pancreatitis, and diabetes not to mention I'm not sure how old he really is) We have seen the eye doctor about a month after diagnosis and she said he had minor cataracts from old age. From my daily checks they haven't seem to gotten any worse.

Our vet seems to think he will not get them. He said most patients he sees with diabetes get them almost immediately, often times how they catch the diabetes. I told him I've been monitoring his blood sugars religiously. He told me it doesn't seem to matter, he's had patients that have well controlled diabetes and contract cataracs. He has also had dog's with absolutely no control and numbers all over the place. "some dogs just seem more susceptible than others."
