  • Supplements for Vader

Hello! Vader is doing well since his bout of pancreatitis began. I have stuck with the homemade food of ground turkey (browned, but not drained), green beans and black eyed peas. I have pretty much got him stabilized!!!! His belly is no longer distended and he is eating very well!

He has, however, had a rough week. A friend came over with his German Shepard a week ago. His dog, for some reason, ended up on top of Vader with his throat in his mouth. After looking him over very well, we did not find any puncture wounds and there was no blood. Friday, a week later, Vader had a large mound on the back of his neck just below the base of his skull. There was some oozing coming from the middle of it. Come to find out, there was a perfect puncture wound in the middle of it as well. Immediately, the wound was clipped, cleaned and antibiotic ointment applied. I also started him on amoxicillin. Just two days later, the mound has shrunk considerably, the oozing has stopped and the center of the mound has hardened up pretty good. Needless to say, I am convinced that it was caught in time and he is going to recover just fine.

In the meantime, his behavior and energy level have all remained good! So, this is my question: I have come across two supplements that I am thinking of trying with him.

    1. 4Life Transfer Factor Canine Complete
    2. Pet Wellbeing Blood Sugar GOLD

I have included pics of the labels on each. The first is a powder sprinkled on his food. The second is a dropper. Has anyone had any experience with either supplement? Now that I have him fairly stable, I don't wanna do anything to jeopardize his numbers. I would, however, like to eventually lower his insulin doses if there is a way to do that.

    Any insight is appreciated!

I’m not familiar with the supplements that you mentioned, but in order to post pictures, you need to upload them to a free photo hosting web site like www.postimages.org and then copy and paste the link to the photo into your post.

As an alternative, our forum allows each user to upload 30 pictures via the forum User CP, located near the upper left corner of your screen. After you open the Control Panel, select Pictures and Albums, add an Album, then upload your pictures to the album. To imbed your picture in a post... open your picture, copy the picture’s BB Code, then paste into your post. You can select Preview Post to make sure it worked properly.

There is no award for how little insulin is given . If you have adequate regulation that is an accomplishment and some never get there

I have not heard of any supplements that had an positive impact on blood sugar . Not saying not to try and i cant say it wont help but i have seen nothing that helped the 8 years i have been on the forum . I have seen diet change be helpful and certain foods made a difference for individual dogs .

glad vader is recovering and things are going well with blood sugar

        Re: Supplements for Vader

Supplement marketers can claim just about anything they want. It gives people hope, and certain ingredients may have publicity about "possible" benefits. Studies and research are generally sparse and/or inconclusive.
Supplements industry is huge money, and it uses crafty marketing to play on people's hope , or use buzzword ingredients.

I've been diabetic 30 years, my endocrinologist has never told me any supplement will change anything about my blood sugar control. If there was any substantial evidence of anything that positively affected blood sugar, diabetics everywhere would be using it and doctors would be talking about it.

Same with "promising" cures for diabetes. You hear about the one or two successes, but not about the 100's of failures. Lots more needs to be done to make it work on the masses. But people hear it and want the treatment.
