  • Novolin N vs Novolin 70/30

My pup has been on Novolin N for a couple of months and is doing well. I'm not completely happy with her curve. I feed her promptly at 6:30 am and pm but her BG level does not begin to drop until around noon. That's 6 hours of high BG. It drops slowly and steadily until it is time for her next meal/injection. Am I correct in thinking that if I switch her to Novolin 70/30 her BG levels should start dropping sooner? I would like her to be out of the 300s sooner and have a longer period of better numbers. Am I over thinking this and being too controlling? (I am rather anal retentive). I would like to hear from anyone else who has switched from Novolin N to Novolin 70/30, why you did it, and how it turned out.

Can you post some curves to see exactly what is occurring ?

I might not go with 70/30 but go with r separately and start with maybe a half unit or less . You would still want some spike in sugar especially just starting out to see how the intermediate insulin is working with the body and the possibility you may have to adjust that lower

Sometimes eliminating a spike at one time can pop up at another so i would go slow and a bit more testing if you decide to make that change

Overall the curve looks good and many would be happy with that

depending how long you have been doing this time may lower the spike as the body adjusts to the reality of injected insulin

Re: Novolin N vs Novolin 70/30

I've been doing some more reading and have found that Novolin 70/30 is not generally recommended for dogs. Do you know why? I thought vetsulin was a 70/30 mix. I don't think I will make the change. Especially since you said a lot of people would be happy with that curve.

With the 70/30 the 30 percent of the faster acting component maybe to much for a dog as we have seen many dogs dont really need it . I have used r with my jesse and for her we used it as a correction to hire sugar but there was trade offs possibly throwing the pattern out of whack . Some use it regularly with good success but for my jesse her regulation can change on a dime . Not sure why so a fast acting as a daily injection maybe just to risky for her because i cant guarantee she will spike

I might give a bit more time and see how things play out . You could reduce the dose by a half unit and see if it reduces the spike a bit but like i said overall the curve is pretty good

If Mollie's numbers were even close to the numbers that you are seeing I would "jump for joy" as Jesse posted.
Mollie was diagnosed 18 months ago and i have never seen numbers for her as low as those that you posted on a regular basis

She is eating Hills w/d, kibble 1/4 c green beans, 1 tbsp Pumpkin 2X a day, insulin is Novolin currently at 6 units 2X a day

I agree with Jesse girl that you may want to try a separate injection of R starting at .5u if you don’t mind doing 2 injections twice a day. My dog was on 70/30 and it was just too much of the short acting for her. It would drop her pretty fast and low but then the NPH wasn’t enough to keep her there. I give her R now but at a much smaller dose in combo with Levemir (which is long acting). Her food spike wasn’t totally predictable... some days it could be 200+ pts and other days 75... so I have to be kind of conservative with the R and do variable dosing based on her fasting reading. It has helped (most days) keep her from hanging out in the mid/high 300s for too long after eating though.

As others have said, that’s a very good looking curve. It’s pretty much a mountain shaped curve, with lows at fasting.

I’d see if her current trend continues. Then, if you want to do a bit of tweaking to flatten things out you could introduce a small dose of Novolin R. With Novolin 70/30 you wouldn’t have any flexibility.
