  • Calculating carbs in food

    Hello,
    I am looking for a new low carb dog food. I used the formula to start with 100 and deduct all the protein, fat, moisture, ash, fiber, etc. to arrive at the total carb %. I linked to a website showing breakdown of certain dog foods. Then I calculated the carb % for W/D canned, Core Wellness dry and canned, and Merrick's canned Country Kitchen. They all were low carb according to my calculation.
    An example of my calculation for W/D canned for which I have an actual can.
    The label states 4% protein, 78% moisture, 2% fat, 5% fiber, and 2% other. If I deduct 91% from 100 I arrive at 9% carb%. However, when I go onto the website linked from this forum under food the table states: 18% protein, 13% fat, 12% fiber and 53% carb % for W/D canned. Where is the difference? W/D looks like a low carb food using the can info, but is high carb according to the website. If I am calculating the info wrong please help me. I need to get this right to help select the right food.

    Thank you,

    Wolf

    Re: Calculating carbs in food

    To compare dry and wet foods you must first subtract the water from the food. What remains is the dry matter: the, protein, fat, carbohydrate and ash. a dry matter analysis tells us the percentage of the dry matter (DM) that is protein, fat, and carbohydrate.

    Formula 2: How to calculate carbohydrate percentage on a dry matter basis

    Step 1. Calculate the total dry matter in the food.

    * Subtract the percentage moisture from 100%.
    * If a food is 75% moisture, it is 25% dry matter (100% – 75%)

    Step 2: divide the listed macronutrient percentage by the dry matter percentage.

    * Protein : 10%. divide 10% by 25% = 40% Protein
    * Fat : 8%: divide 8% by 25% = 32 % fat

    Step 3: Use formula 1 above and calculate carbohydrates

    * (remember to subtract the ash)
    * Carbohydrates = 100% - 40% (protein)-32% (fat) -6% (ash) = 22%

    On your W/D canned it would be 100 minus 78 or 22. 5 divided by 22 is 23% fiber (good carbs) 4 divided by 22 is 18% protein, 2% fat is 9% and 2% other is 9. Subracting that all from 100% would be 59% leaving 41% carbs. Hope this helps
