  • Is anyone re-using syringes?

I was reading on the ADA (American Diabetes Association) web site today and it spoke about re-using syringes, stating that it is safe to do and reduces the cost of syringes. I haven't done this, and am a bit leery of doing so, but wanted to know if anyone else has and what results you've had. Here's the link:

In the very beginning I'd heard this too and actually did use 1 syringe twice, for am and pm injections. But then I saw the pictures of what needles that have been reused look like and stopped doing this. It also can allow for contamination within the insulin bottle.

UGH! Thanks for the pics...VERY dramatic, and easy to make a decision. I knew I was leery about it for a good reason, but wasn't sure why...now I know! Thanks!

I saw those pics and would never re-use a syringe. Buying in 100's, they're about 23 cents each, or 46 cents a day.

That said, I have "accidentally" used a syringe two and even three times, but that was when Mik pulled away from me after the first insertion. I had to re-grip him and do it again. He moaned a bit, and I realized that even though the insertions were two seconds apart, they were actually two uses.

So, when my grip is not perfect and he pulls away from the needle, I now push the insulin back into the vial and get a new syringe.

And feel horrible that I hurt him.
