  • Grapeseed Extract

Just some things I found on Grapeseed Extract in a search today:

Grape seed extract (GSE) (Vitis Vinnifera) is an extract from grape seeds from red grapes. Grape seeds have a high content of compounds called oligomeric proanthocyanidins— better known as OPCs, which are potent antioxidants. Because of their simple chemical structure, OPCs are readily absorbed into the bloodstream.

    Grape seed extract:
    • Protects the body from premature aging and disease
    • Supports healthy skin
    • Promotes cellular health, elasticity, and flexibility
    • Improves blood circulation by strengthening capillaries, arteries, and veins
    • Reduces risk of cataracts
    • Protects against cancer
    • Provides cardiovascular support
Grape seed extract is especially beneficial to aging animals, and animals with cataracts, cancer and heart disease.
On the Safety of Grape Seed Extract: Grapes and raisins have been of much debate in the past few years. Here is a short quote from the Veterinary Information Network board posts ”Ingestion of grapes or raisins has been associated with acute renal failure in dogs. Anecdotal evidence suggests that cats may also be affected… Being a fructose sugar, it is quickly eliminated through the kidneys where it reaches high tissue levels. It then causes a certain cell “power house” called the mitochondria to open and allow calcium to enter.” This causes the mitochondria to stop functioning, therefore the death of the cell. “Recent unpublished data indicates that the toxic component is water soluble, and within the flesh of the grape/raisin, not the seed. Thus the current thinking is that grape seed may be safe to use.”
Grape seed is often found with antioxidant supplements used for human cancer treatments. The seed induces the cell deaths of highly replicating cancer cells. There was a study done on men with prostate carcinoma which showed approximately 90% inhibition of the pathways that induces the growth of the cancer cells.
The flavanoids in the seed are known to reduce inflammation, and support the immune system particularly with respiratory issues, allergies, and skin problems. It has been used in cats and dogs successfully without any reported problems.

One more interesting piece of info I found:

Through an as yet undetermined mechanism, researchers have found that combining Vitamin C and grape-seed polyphenols results in blood pressure elevations. [Ward NC et al. The combination of vitamin C and grape-seed polyphenols increases blood pressure: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. J Hypertens. 2005;23(2):427-434.

      Thanks Patty,

I use grape seed oil on my salads because of the health benefits I've read about and it also has a nice light taste. I also use it to cook with since it also has a higher smoke point than most other oils.

I've always held off using it with the dogs however because I wasn't sure if it would be dangerous to them since it was made from the grape seed.

      Thanks for that information.

FYI: I'm using it externally for Izzy. I did not find anything on the internet that made me think that could cause a problem. What do you think?

Chloe (Cushings) and Sparky (diabetes) both get a capsule a night. Vet says Chloe's beginning cataracts have gone from opaque to transluscent. He was amazed. Grapes are toxic but grape SEEDS are not. Product was developed by a veterinary opthamologist and a pharmacist.

            Carrol,

What capsule are they getting. I have enough trouble finding grape seed oil in a bottle around here, let alone a capsule.

            Thanks

Thanks, I think that answers my question. I had seen another thread about Ocu-Glo, but haven't had time to check it out yet.

                    Re: Grapeseed Extract

I had talked to my veterinary ophthalmologist about ocu-glo back in November as well as a number of other products. There are actually 2 ophthalmologists behind the creation of ocu-glo. My vet knew them and favors the work of one of them.

Here's a link to the discussion I had with him in Ali's thread: http://www.k9diabetes.com/forum/show...?t=615&page=11 He emphasized it won't reverse cataracts that have developed but can improve the health and structures of the eye to aid in prevention of eye disorders.

Our eye doc made the comment that nuclear sclerosis can actually offer some protection from cataracts. We changed subjects and I didn't get around to asking why that is.

I'm definitely not opposed to the use of this product. I think it offers some good antioxidant protection and the low end of some vitamin supplementation. Just wanted to share what I'd heard.
