Syringes at WalMart..GRRRR....

So I go to WalMart to pick up insulin & syringes...

"Do you have a prescription?"

Or some such nonsense...

"Huh?" I wittily replied.

blah blah blah...

Turns out that particular WalMart requires some kind (not specific) of note from the vet or doctor to sell syringes.

She said it was a "liability" issue.

So let me get this straight... if I buy syringes fro WalMart & use them for whatever... "they" are liable?

Can we just go ahead & kill all the lawyers right now? Preferably veeeery slowly? What an effen crock. This country is doomed...

I went to another WalMart & got what I wanted.

Reminds me of trying to buy batteries at a grocery store on a Sunday here in SC where there are strict blue laws, no sale of certain items before 1:30pm.

I can't buy the batteries for the camera in the grocery but I can buy the film. I can buy both at Wal-mart down the street. Go figure.

I don't know if it is a state thing but there is no prescription required in SC for syringes and it sounds the same way in your state, it is some local idot who equates syringe with illeagal.

Where I am in Australia I can buy syringes online and at pharmacies and even get them free from the Needle exchanges (for drug addicts) BUT I can't get the life saving insulin without a script. I think the world has gone mad!

I wonder if you didn't happen to come across and individual who had misunderstood something OR had a personal belief that they were acting on.

I remember going into a pharmacy to get a certain type of syringe to use for feeding a baby cockatiel (standard equipment for that job). Although they answered my questions etc. and were going to sell it to me if they had what I wanted, there was a definite "coolness" in the air until I decided I better tell them what I wanted it for and then the "sun came out".

When I've wanted syringes for using in craft the kids were doing I've always gone to the pharmacy we use regularly as I don't need to explain anything there.

But Jenny is right - the world has gone mad!

I'm in Missouri and technically they don't require a prescription by law in this state for either. But they worded it so that pharmacies also have the right to set their own rules. On top of that, supposedly since the wording doesn't specifically include animals, they don't fall under legally obtaining it without a prescription...or at least that's what out vet said. I need an Rx for the NPH and the syringes for Bailey at both Walgreen's and Walmart. Walmart wouldn't even give me the ReLion labeled NPH until I had the vet write out another prescription with the ReLion wording.

I think it must be different all over, at first we used the Eli Lily NPH which needed the rx for about 2 yrs, then when I asked the pharmacy for the Relion brand they just gave it to me and haven't asked for anything since, I guess they know its for my dog by now,

In the US, only the analog insulins need a prescription; in Canada, no insulin needs one. The various pharmacies set their own rules for selling non-analog insulin. I never needed a prescription for Iletin.

The various states set the syringe laws, though. And even if you're in a "no prescription" state, the pharmacy's policy may be to ask for one.

When I was buying U 100 syringes, I needed a prescription for them. My first fill was VERY funny because I was having it done at the combination supermarket/pharmacy while I shopped.

Happened to draw the pharmacist from you know where, according to a family member who'd had numerous innings with her regarding her own prescriptions. She started asking me if I had any allergies, and so on down the line. Told her to wait a minute and READ the script because I didn't need to answer the questions--the prescription was for insulin syringes for my dog. (Think it was one of the times somebody "got her" back. )

When we switched to Caninsulin/Vetsulin, I ordered the UltiCare syringes from MN; the state doesn't require a prescription for syringes, so I never needed one any more.

We had many a laugh about the prescription for the syringes because back then, you could buy them by the carload on eBay--all you needed was a way to pay there!
