Not sure if anyone is interested but here goes anyway.

I had purchased some (human) sam e for Buddy and he hadn't started it before he passed away. I thought what the heck so I have been taking it until it ran out last month. I have Osteo and Rheumatoid arthritis and am taking some pretty unfriendly drugs so I have monthly blood tests. Well, my liver function numbers have jumped in the last month since I stopped the sam e.

AST was 23 now 41 (<35)
ALT was 34 now 68 (<40)

I have restarted the sam e and will be very interested in the numbers next month.

Jen that is interesting. I often laugh that I worry more about the dogs than I do myself. My dogs need their own medicine cabinet for all the "additives" I put in their food to keep them healthy. Thanks for sharing. Kim

My sister is on a fairly high dose of an anticonvulsant which gives the old liver a bit of a workout, too. Her ALP is elevated but everything is within range.

Next time she goes to the doctor we'll ask about her taking Milk Thistle - I've got heaps of Mia's left over for starters. It will be interesting to see if that brings her ALP down. She only has tests done every six months or so though so it'll be a while before we see any "results".

I go to all her appointments with her as she needs an advocate and "explainer" present for a lot of things.

Did you confess to taking "Buddy's meds"?

I don't tell my doctor anything because I think he is a bit of a nuf nuf and I only see him for the referral and scripts in between visits to the rheumatologist.
I don't see the specialist now until August so I will have another couple of months to see results if I can keep getting the "illegal" copies of the path results.

Anyway they are human meds! The ones I am taking now are called Mood Lift by Naturopathica and claims to "Support emotional wellbeing, joint and liver health."

Here's the Urban Dictionary definition for nuf nuf.

1. nuff-nuff
A Retard.

Someone that can't integrate properly in society.
Someone that has a very low IQ usually due to learning disabilities of no fault of their own as opposed to a ning-nang or general idiot who is stupid because they never engaged their brain or tried to learn anything.

Used in a derogatory way to describe idiots who behave as if they never received an education or to decribe a person who behaves in a way that contradicts their IQ level.

Gosh, Jenny, now I'm worried about the quality of your health care or as Alison would say; I'm gobsmacked. I had to look that one up too the first time I saw it. It means being totally speachless....unable to think of anything to say. I had no idea that I would need a dictionary to communicate with you Aussies.

I'm gobsmacked over the behavior of my ex-nuf nuf.

There, did I get it right in a sentence???? I could say it freely here and no one would know what I was talking about. In fact, I can't wait to call him a nuf nuf to his face! LOL!

This is very interesting about the SAMe, Jenny! When I've run out of it for the dogs and don't remember to get any for a bit, I can tell the difference in their mobility pretty quickly. Let me know how the Mood Lift works, too.

I have finally had to give my pill box over to Jim. I simply cannot remember to take my meds and heaven help us all when I don't! But, like you Beth, I can remember the dog's meds!

Leslie, Could you tell me more about the changes to mobility that you see with SAMe.

McGill's big problem now is arthritis and mobility. He is taking Previcox and tramadol which are helping but I'd like to be able to do more for him.

I've never seen any changes from glucosamine and chondroitin although I've given it for several years and will continue to do so since it won't hurt and just maybe it is helping and I'm just not seeing it (I've used a variety of brands -- some quite expensive).

When I first heard the word gobsmacked used, I thought my friend said God-smacked (which actually made sense to me). Eventually, I got the difference.

Hi Carol,

Sorry for the slow response time.

Ruby has severe degenerative arthritis in one of her hips and mild in the other. Squirt had both back legs operated on for luxating patellas when she was young and has arthritis now. When they have been off of the SAMe for a week or maybe a bit more, they both slow down quite a bit - more napping, less participation in the goings on, walking slower, shorter walks. Squirt get stiffer in her gait especially in the back, Ruby takes longer to get up the stairs and at times will choose not to follow me, Squirt hasn't been able to climb stairs of more than 5-6 steps since her surgery but she will have more trouble with those few especially going down, they are both more hesitant to jump up on the couch etc, stop playing altogether, and both pant more which, along with all the above, tells me they are hurting more. One of SAMe's properties is that of an anti-inflammatory.

Ruby started out on the Previcox and it helped for about 2 weeks then seemed to lose its effectiveness. Since it is so hard on the liver plus costly, we decided to stop it. She gets Tramadol as needed, gluco/cond w/msm, salmon oil, SAMe and today will start Vit E. Once she is adjusted to the Vit E addition, I plan to start increasing her Omega 3's and 6's. I've been collecting ideas and input from folks for a bit now and continue to research them as options for Ruby. And of course diet assistance.

I had a really cool link to a drug site that also listed supplements, etc. I'm fixin' to leave to do some running but I'll try to remember to find that site again and share it.

Thanks so much Leslie.

I've just placed a call with McGill's IM to double check that it is okay along with his atypical supplements (can't imagine it wouldn't be but...). McGill gets salmon oil too (forgot about that one).

It sounds like SAMe works very well and I am anxious to try it. What you are describing when they are off the SAMe sounds much like McGill.

That's really interesting about SamE as an anti-inflammatory!!

I was gettin' around to asking for a definition of nuf nuf... I think that may come in useful in the future as well!
