  • Re: Monkey

what time do you normally give him his shot?

I didn't give Jenny any insulin a couple of mornings when she was really low and she was in the 300's by afternoon.

I'd worry about overlap though if you are a couple of hours late now. If I gave him anything right now I'd make it very small just for his basal needs.

Don't Natalie and Patty say that half the dose is for basal needs, the other half is for the food?

I hope you get some answers that are treatable with the specialist Betty. I know this has been all consuming since Thanksgiving. hugs. Judi
Jenny: 6/6/2000 - 11/10/2014 She lived with diabetes and cushings for 3 1/2 years. She was one of a kind and we miss her.

Wish I would have read your post first but I went ahead and gave him 8 units and decided I would feed him really late. I figured no one would be reading posts on a Saturday afternoon.

Betty, IMO 8u is alot with a BG of 121. Please watch him carefully today. But I know you always do, anyway!

I didn't think he would go too low but I did think he might go extremely high. By the time I gave him his shot I thought the little bit of the early food would kick in plus I forgot he also had a pill pocket and a tiny bit of syrup. Whew!!! He should be sick to his stomach now (just kidding). He acts great right now.

Now I feel guilty about by-passing my vet. He has been good to me and has done well by Monkey the last six years. Now how do I tell him. Guess I'll call him and tell him Monday morning.

What I didn't like was they told me not to feed Monkey Monday morning and his appointment isn't until 3pm. When I questioned that then she said go ahead and feed him.

I think he probably will go higher but of course better high than low.

Thanks! Makes me feel much better. (Ruffles was 15-16 lbs and her maintenance was about 6.5u.) The extra food/pill pocket will help, too.

He is doing fine now. Thanks Mary. He takes a lot of insulin for his size I think.

He sure is cute, though. I can see why you are so taken with him! Glad he's doing well today.

341 at 6:09. Yeh he is a cutie and he has such a shy sweet little boy attitude. My other dog is his complete opposite. Fiesty, head strong, energetic, desparately wants to be the alpha. It's taken two years but he is kind of buddies with her now.

Although when it comes to the neighbor dog being in Monk's yard he wants to rip its head off. But he was definitely reserved when we had all the dogs here at Christmas time.

My older dog who was half his size was his original protector. He loved her so much. She had untreated cushings supposedly but not a diabetic. I wouldn't have been a bit surprised if she would have been diagnosed with diabetes. She was over weight up until Monk became a diabetic. But I was very surprised when he was diagnosed! He was not over-weight nor did he have any other problems.

I understand what you mean about going around your vet. I would feel odd about going around mine and I love mine. BUT I don't think mine would mind me doing that anyhow where I think yours might. Is awkward no matter what you do tho.
