    Re: Maggie & Caninsulin

    Amydunn,

I gave her 6 units at 9:00am yesterday. Today I'm starting to giving 10 units 2 x daily.
The half hour wait time between feeding and giving needle is that to see if she is going to vomit or is this to give the food time to catch up to her insulin? I am confused?

      Re: Maggie & Caninsulin

People do sometimes leave a short gap between feeding and injecting to check that the food isn't going to be vomited up. But if that isn't generally a particular risk then most people inject at about the same time as feeding. We inject actually while our dog eats so he is distracted - and he is always very keen on his food so we know he will eat it all up.
If you have no reason to think your dog is likely to vomit then I would expect that you could bring the injection nearer to the feeding time. I see Natalie suggested you might even inject before feeding. With many dogs it seems that the food kicks in faster than the insulin so you get a food rise before the insulin catches up, so adding a 30 minute delay could be adding to this effect and making the food rise even greater.

(A delay in injecting might help if you had the opposite problem ie a drop after injecting because then you would be giving the food a chance to get ahead of the insulin).

        Hi Eddie,

Injecting while Maggies eating is a good idea. She never has vomited and she is distracted while eating her food. Like your guy Maggie loves her food.
I took all the testing stuff off the kitchen table and put it on the dining room table. I know I have to stay with this 10 units am/10 units pm to see some results.
Thank you for clearing that up Eddie.

Some vets say wait 30 minutes - I used to do that when Maggie's pancreatitis was flaring up but I don't wait now. The only time I wait is if she is below 80 at fasting, I wait an hour for her to go up then check her again and inject. There is no reason to really wait to inject if your dog doesn't have any type of vomiting issues.

            Hi Amydunn,

I will inject her when she is eating, sounds like this is the best time for my Maggie.
Haven't tested today, just gave her the 10 units.

            Thanks Amydunn

              Hi,

Be sure to keep the twice daily injections approximately 12 hours apart (we aim for between 11 and 13 hours apart).

Our first vet post diagnosis told us that too....because they were making about $1k a month on us from all the curves and stays at the office soaphie had to do....we figured out the vet didn't know anything about diabetes and was milking us....we quickly fired her after she said not to test the pup.

there were countless times I did not give insulin because my guy was running low (glucose). sometimes I would need to feed him first and wait to inject until glucose started to rise. some doctors will never get it...

                          Re: Maggie & Caninsulin

My boys disgnosing vet kept him overnight to regulate him. Four months after the fact we asked for copies of those records. Had already switched vets. He gave my 97 pound dog one dose of 40u of nph insulin and dropped his blood glucose to LO...under 20. Then wrote out instructions for us to give him 40u twice daily. We skipped around seven shots the first week he was home. Had we not tested and given him 40u he likely would not have survived that first week.

A vet can certainly make suggestions and recommendations. But they can also make mistakes. If you prefer to test you have every right to be that advocate for your pup.

                            Re: Maggie & Caninsulin

A prime example of why this is bad advice - this morning my Maggie has been going through an infection, taking super strong antibiotics with pretty terrible side effects and before food and insulin her bg was 42. What if I had not tested her and then given her full dose of insulin? Unless this vet has some kind of super natural powers that enable him to measure blood sugar without testing, then I would take the safe route and test. You have to take control of your dog's health and well being. Now, the flip side of it is that if she is high, you can't be making crazy adjustments to insulin. The only time to make an adjustment up is after a curve, not a single reading. If she is low, it is different because that can be immediate and life threatening.

the thing about insulin is once you give it you cant take it back

so testing gives the opportunity to evaluate the number before giving the shot . if normal you give it . if lower you may have to hold off a bit and raise the numbers up to a normal level before giving . sometimes just letting the meal get ahead of insulin is all you need and back to normal .

to me this is not complicated just simple math and oh it has saved my jesse on many occasions

                                Hi,
I don't think I explained my last comment well enough.
My vet was against the week of not testing and giving her a even shot at each injection.
I decided to go against his advise and have been given Maggie 12 units for the last 3 days (today included) I will keep this up for 2 more days and then do a curve on her.
I will post results of her curve and hopefully you can give me some insite to what I can do to help regulator her.
