    Thanks Barb

It is not cushings. I am so glad that it is out of the way. His cortisol post ACTH was 472.

They are going to do a bile acid test to ensure that the liver is functioning. They are going to let me know when to bring him in, as he has to have his breakfast at 7am.

Is there any reason why I should let the insulin come up to room temperature before injecting him?

I am changing his meals to 50/50 instead of having a third in the morning.

I have brought back a copy of the ACTH and the Blood test EDTA. Not that I understand a word of it.

Happy to hear that you have pet insurance to cover costs. I must admit that my philosophy on pet insurance has changed drastically over the past ten months - lol! Also happy to hear that Yuli does not have cushings! How has he been feeling?

Given that he is a terrier breed, has your vet run any fasting blood panels to check for elevated triglycerides or cholesterol, in addition to his liver values? Seems some breeds are naturally prone to high lipid levels even when they are on low fat diets. Hope the bile acid tests goes well.

Regarding insulin, I've read many places that cold insulin stings when it is administered so most folks will bring it to room temperature (or warmer) before injecting. Some folks hold the capped needle in their mouths. Others put it under their arms. I'm sure other forum members may have additional tips to share as well.

          Hi Holli

Yes, thank goodness for pet insurance. I have paid in enough over the years with the three dogs!

Tibetan Terriers are not true terriers, they were miss classifed (apparently). His cholesterol was 4.4 which is within normal range. I don't see a reading for triglycerides. There are a number of readings that are highlighted as out of range. It would take a while to type them up!

He shows no discomfort having cold insulin, but from now on I will warm it for him!

He is definitely more cheerful than he has been.

                Hi Ann,
Cant comment on those blood results but just wanted to say very pleased that its not cushings, fab news. You must be chuffed.

Hows Yuli feeling these days? Are his numbers coming better?

You are doing so well, it is exhausing in the early days, but hang in there it will become more stable with time and sort of become second nature and part of normal daily routine.

Hugs to you both, Jen x

                  Hi Jen
He seems to be brighter sine the new insulin. It is difficult because of the ear infection. He goes for the bile acid test tomorrow.

I scared myself silly yesterday looking at the blood tests and concluded that his liver was about to pack in. So I have stopped looking!

I have heard of a afir amount of people using the milk thistle that Barb recommended with good results.

Great news that it isn't cushings.

                      So glad to hear that.

Milk Thistle bought Abby's liver functions within normal range within 6 months. But in just a few weeks, you could see a difference. Demarinim is another that has both Milk Thistle and Sam-E. Both together is better, but it is more expensive.

I have used both... but started with the Milk Thistle. One thing to mention about the liver, and that is it can heal itself. It may be in this state due to the Diabetes being uncontolled, prior to Yuli being diagnosed.

Never heard of milk thistle, but I found this link which is a bit off-putting.

My vet recommends milk thistle and SAM-e as supplements for Jack. There have been many clinical studies which demonstrate the effectiveness of both for liver detoxification and liver regeneration.
Nutramax Laboratories sells them as separate products and also in a combined form as a chewable tablet for dogs/cats. http://www.nutramaxlabs.com/Vet/Prod...er-health.aspx
The milk thistle/phosphatidyl choline complex (lecithin) is good because it increases the absorbtion of the silymarin. These products are expensive. Since Jack is a large dog I give him the human Samsyl version from Nutramax and just wrp the capsule in a bit of cheese or liverwurst so that he will swallow it. I have also just used basic milk thistle and human SAM-e supplements dosed in the same manner.
Ivermectin (heartworm preventive) is extensively metabilized by the liver and since he is heartworm positive he gets doxycycline for 10 days each month. He often gets cholestasis and jaundice from the doxy. Dandelion root and artichoke root aid in bile transport and they help to get his bile flow back to normal.
There are also other supplements that I give Jack for his liver function. I give him milk thistle/silymarin and SAM-E on a regular basis and the others when he is taking ivermectin or doxycycline.

                              Thanks JacksMommy

I know nothing at all about supplements. I will have a word with my vet and see if they have any thoughts on this. Because we are so new to the disease, I don't want to give him anything without consulting first.

He gets a bile acid test tomorrow, not sure when we get the results, but I will ask the vet then.
