Sounds like you have a wonderfully understanding vet - something that can make a big difference during difficult times. Happy Poppy is enjoying some chicken soup for now. May you enjoy each day you have together!

Oh I am so sad to read this update. The road we all dread....

Sometimes I have fought the inevitable so hard that I now feel it sometimes robbed me of being present to them, or certainly made it even that much more anguished. If the time is truly near, I wish you peace and acceptance, which the dogs do so much better then us.

I have a soft spot for Poppy. Please know you will be in my thoughts.

Lucky for both of us we found each other. I'd do it all again girly.

I'm so sorry Poppy isn't doing better than she is. Enjoy the days you have with her and give her a scratch for us.

You are all so lovely, I'm welling up while reading your good wishes.

Saturday was a terrible day - she spent all day in a really deep sleep. We had to go out for a couple of hours and when we arrived home, she wouldn't wake up!! But then she lifted her head.

The vet was insistent that she eats something - we bought oxtail soup and squirted a little into her mouth - not pleasant. Another vomiting incident followed.

But then, late on Saturday night, I offered her a small amount of leftover baked salmon (from our dinner). Lo and behold, she ate it, and was looking for more. I gave her about a tablespoon of fish - I didn't want it coming up again - and it didn't.

Yesterday, each meal has seen her more interested in food. Last night she even had some crushed Hills wd mixed with wet food. Only small meals - a couple of tablespoons of food each time.

As her appetite has improved, her lethargy has decreased. It's as if a little bit of food has given her the energy to be interested in food again.

I just spoke to a neighbour who's dog lived to 19 and who used the same vet. He said that for him, they didn't prolong anything, they gently suggested when enough was enough. I want to keep Poppy as long as possible and hope I'm being fair to her - I hope I know when enough is enough.

                  Hi there,
I so hope that Poppy's appetite continues to improve and that she will be back to her old self soon.

I can't tell you how many times I've hoped to know too. With every ER visit, and close calls we've been through the subject always comes up. One of my best friends, who uses the same vet as me for her kitties, has felt the loss of of three of her fur babies (all of whom lived full rich lives). She has let me know we are fortunate to work with a vet who can gently suggest when it's time to let them go. When I talk to her about it, she reminds me of the importance of cherishing each moment we share with them is. I'm confident that in her own way Poppy will let you know when it's time in her own way, and you will have the support of all of us here as well as your vet to help you cope.

I most certainly don't mean to be a downer, I just want you know we're all here for you. We'll be keeping you and Poppy in our prayers for continued improvement, and many more moments to share with each other.

                  Sending healing vibes your way,

                        • We said goodbye to Poppy yesterday

Just a little message to let you know that we had to make the big decision yesterday to put Poppy to sleep.

For most of last year, she was in great health and enjoying life. But in November, she suddenly became very disorientated. The small amount of sight that she had retained went suddenly. She was very lost - in the garden, in the house.

Then just before Christmas, she had a seizure and was put on epilepsy medication. By this stage, her diabetes was the least of her problems. For the last few weeks, she was restless, lost, having to be lifted to her food, to her bed, to the garden to relieve herself. She had had enough.

So yesterday, we put Poppy to sleep. She died peacefully in my arms, in our sitting room.

Thank you to the contributors to these forums for all the advice and support. It was invaluable.

                          Our hearts are broken.
