  • Re: Baby's vaccines since being diagnosed

Thanks Kathy, I've been up all night with her she been getting up to pee every night for the past two wks but, when I checked her urine she didn't have much glucose I have a feeling she's getting another UTI. She is going in Monday now I moved up her visit. I did give her the 18 units last night and right now at 5am she 325 so something isn't right. I also started another vial yesterday morning too. I think I will feed her less canned food this morning and just see if that helps maybe she needs 18 in the am too but, can't get a hold of the vet till 8:30 and feed her at six. She has been doing so good not dropping to a great reading in the day but, at least under 200 but, high in am and pm and I'm not just sure how to adjust the food. I'm going to try to catch her urine today they are in a half day and by Monday I will know if she has a UTI. I thought by now we would have this under control it has been six months but, I guess with diabetes there is always something that could throw everything off. I feel like I need to take a course so much to remember - you mentioned something about injectable syringe but, I am using Relion syringes and you can't use them with those syringes I get paranoid everytime I inject her thinking I am doing it wrong. I'm going to bring one with me too the vet and show him how I do it. So tired right now from being up all night worrying and trying too figured out what is wrong or if I am doing something wrong. What would you decrease in food wise she is getting 3/4 cup dry, 3/4 cup which is 1/2 half canned dog food , 1/2 cup chopped chicken, 1/2cup string beans, 1/4 ts metamucil for fiber doesn't seem liked a lot of food for a larger dog. Will post her readings later today. Wanted to asked you when I post do I add a new subject liked I did in this one or just click under the heading of this post where lab lover shows I never know if I am doing it right. I noticed this time it shows my heading of my thread and not Lab lover. Thanks, ida

      Ida,

I would have a check for a UTI done at the vet visit and I would leave the food just where it is until you talk to your vet at that visit.

The problem with diabetes is that it makes you more prone to infections, especially to UTI's. Most of the time, when there is an infection, the bg's go up from it because the body creates more glucose to help itself get rid of the infection.

If Baby does have a UTI, this may be why you are seeing the higher numbers; you also need to remember that you don't instantly see a change when you increase insulin; it can take anywhere from 3-7 days to see the full result of an increase.

So I would just leave everything right where it is until Baby's Monday vet appointment.

You post it where you like, Ida; we can merge the threads which I'll be doing after typing this!

Thanks Kathy I will have her checked for the UTI I did give her the same amt of food in am and pm and this evening before feeding she was 156 so maybe she did need the 18 units, that's a big difference from 300's readings in the evening glad too get her too the vet on Monday, I have all my questions written down to asked. I just don't want her losing too much weight this is lowest she has been since she was a puppy - my son said her head looks bigger than her body but, we are so used to seeing so many layers of fat on her she does looked better and I know it will helped with hip problems. Thanks for helping me. Take care, Ida

          Ida,

A good question for Baby's vet on Monday is what her ideal weight should be; then you will know how far off from it you are right now.

Thanks I will asked him - I also wondered how does everyone catch their dogs urine I know males are easier than the females, I have a flat tupperware that I slide under Baby, but now as soon as she see's it coming out she won't go for me. I have even tried to hide it and just walked around the back yard with her - she is getting too smart now.

Just wondered if anyone has any other easier ways too catch her urine I want to make sure too be able to bring it on Monday's visit. She will never let the vet's office do it. Ida

                Hi Ida,

Poor you! I worry about you worrying so much!

Kathy's done a great job of answering your questions and since I had a blind boy dog... I can't help much with the urine catch either. I used to just shove the little stick right into the stream! Chris did, even though he was blind, usually know I was testing him and sometimes he would quit going... but we didn't urine test much anyway since we did lot of blood testing.

I'll be interested to see what the vet says about Baby's ideal weight. You can usually get a sense of whether her weight is good. If you can feel her ribs but they aren't protuding, for example. And if she's got a nice "tuck" at her hips.

There is a chart and description here: http://www.cvm.tamu.edu/clinicalnutrition/bcsdog.shtml The images are pretty small but the text gives you a good idea too.

Then as far as gaining or losing weight, it's all a matter of calories - more food to gain, less food to lose. With slight adjustments to the insulin to go along with the change in how much food you give.

Sometimes dogs put on the prescription diets keep losing weight because there are so much less calories in those foods than in what they were eating before diabetes was diagnosed. We could not get Chris to gain his weight back on WD until we gave him a LOT more of it... and oh man, could the WD create poop... but eventually we got his weight back on him.

It's helpful to calculate how many calories you are giving Baby so you can increase or decrease as needed and then if you change foods you can calculate the same number of calories for the new food as the old food. That really helped us keep Chris consistent through many diet changes and maintain his healthy weight.

Good luck Monday and I hope it's "just" a UTI...

                  Ida,

Here's a Purina link about how to visually determine if your dog is overweight, underweight or just right:

                  http://www.placervillevet.com/canine...0condition.htm

And this one has the best thread title I've ever seen on this board --it's tips on collecting urine for testing:

                  http://k9diabetes.com/forum/showthre...ght=collecting

I think there are some tips in there from people like Rick and Lucy which should give you some "how to" ideas.

I've just been going through photo galleries. You said that was Baby's first snow... she doesn't look like a youngster there. When did you get her?

She looks very fit in the pictures.

We lived in Miami until she was four we have been here for 3 yrs this month. That was taken I think in Jan or Feb of this yr. I just checked Baby's blood before we feed her this eveniing at 6 and it was 40 I almost passed out she acting fine I double check it with another strip and also a control test - how could this happened. I was out for a couple of hrs but, my husband was here and she did nothing but, lay around. We did give 18 units last night for the second time. Her reading this morn was341 still high last night at 10 it was 103. How long should I wait to give her the shot I think she is too low right now and should I give 17 instead of the 18.

                          Hi,
I've never been in your situation but I would not inject until you are well into the 100's. See how things are in an hour. If Baby is 100+ when you test her then maybe give a reduced dose and see what happens throughout the day. The food without insulin should bring the BG up fairly quickly.
                          Good luck

I'm going to agree with Jenny re: Baby getting into the 100's before any more insulin. I would cut her dose of that by 1/3 to make it 12 units when you do give her the shot.

Thankfully, you are seeing the vet tomorrow!

So I should wait until maybe at least 150 and then give her 12 units only. How could this happened is it from us raising her insulin to 18.

                                Ida,

It's very possible that 18 units is too much. It can take 2-7 days to see the full effect of an increase, and it looks like this may be too much insulin for Baby.

Not giving Baby the shot until she reads about 150 and then giving only 12 units when you do, should make sure that there are no overnight hypos.

Your vet should be able to get Baby back on track from this when you see him tomorrow; my main concern is that she's on less insulin to make sure she has no hypos tonight.
