Re: Bruno is on three a day now

It did spike the next morning...442. Should have given a reduced amount maybe with more food.
    Have been testing before each meal/injection:442, 326. and 195 at 5. 1. 1nd 9.
Again it went down in the evening even with no walk so I gave 10 units and extra food. It was 302 this morning. I'll continue and do another curve in a week.
Thank you so much for suggestions and sharing your experiences through all of this. I hate to make a pin cushion out of Bruno, but he has been so good and cooperates all the way.

Re: Bruno is on three a day now

This is looking promising. Vet recommended 17 units, but it sometimes goes to normal before the next feeding/injection. Have changed to a lower dosage (10 units) when that happened, checking BG before each meal, but it goes a lot higher than 200 eight hours later. I have been getting blood from his elbow callouses, but they are looking sore so I am giving him a break to let them heal. Went to 15 units every time. The last three checks before meals at 15 units: 105, 186, and 207. So will stick with that.
Will do a curve on Thursday.

I worry about it going too low. Bruno is a couch potato, and when I see him sleeping, I say "Bruno, are you OK?" He looks at me and pounds his tail so I assume all is well.

i like the tail wag to let you know things are a ok

my jesse would only accept a certain amount on insulin at one time anymore things became unstable

          hope things continue to improve

Re: Bruno is on three a day now

            Update:
He has been getting 15 units after each meal at 5 AM, 1 PM, and 9 PM plus Nature Valley Instinct grain free biscuits before bedtime for a week now. His curve yesterday:
            5 AM 266
            7 100
            9 155
            11 104
            1 PM 117
            3 122
            6 119
            9 143
            5AM Fri 215

Except for overnight, all of his numbers were in or close to normal range.
Maybe it goes up overnight because of his bedtime treat biscuit?
I had him to the vet this morning at 9, four hours after his first meal/injection and the reading was 70. So we're going down to 14 units three times a day.

Re: Bruno is on three a day now

I would be concerned about that 70 so going down is a good idea. Those numbers from the curve are great but they don't leave much room so trending a bit higher might make you breathe more easily.

Re: Bruno is on three a day now...Help

Remember Bruno had been on 15 units three times a day and it looked good until it was 70 at the vet office. The One Touch is apparently considerably higher than what vet gets so we went down to 14 three times a day. He has been on it for about 10 days and I was going to do a curve this week.
Yesterday I took a reading 4 hours between his lunch and dinner injections...250. I thought that's OK considering that One Touch reads high. Today I took one midway between Breakfast and lunch...336, and another midway between lunch and dinner...452. Now I'm tempted to go back to 15 or higher. Should I stick wit 14, do a curve then go to vet before changing?

( I just started on a new vial of insulin. Could that matter so much?)

now did they do a comparison to the one touch and if so what did they use to compare with ? i think a lab analyzer is best as being the most accurate to compare with

Re: Bruno is on three a day now

I did a comparison once in the vet office and the One Touch was about 50 higher than the value the vet got. Not sure what instrument he uses, but no doubt it'is more accurate. He takes a larger blood sample from the vein. Though higher than the true value, the One Touch seems to have good reproducibility.

Just my opinion, but I would be suspicious if any human meter read higher than the AlphaTrak or lab test. I don't think in all my comparisons of 7 different meters did I ever see a human meter read higher than the alphaTrak. Maybe operator error by the vet tech??

I did a comparison calculation with the ReliOn Prime (human) meter against the Alphatrak2 due to cost factor and the ReliOn meter reading was lower than the Alphatrak2. I divide the ReliOn meter reading by anywhere from .8 to .73 and can calculate a very close Alphatrak2 reading. For instance, if Daisy's ReliOn meter reads 80, I'll know that she's between 100 (.8) and 109.5 (.73). The human meters do read differently, but so far with me they have been lower.

one number based on one test doesnt seem very scientific .all handhelds pet ones included can be off and the higher the blood sugar the farther it can be off

the point i have found out about this disease you cant assume anything . there are vulnerabilities to blood testing with handhelds . human and mechanical .

i have been told many things by professionals that was not correct in jesses situation . we are all vulnerable to making mistakes thats inherent in all humans

Re: Bruno is on three a day now

All meters have some element of error because unlike a lab test, it is using an algorithm to figure the number. I used a One Touch Ultra and it usually tested very close within 5 or 10 of the vet's meter and the lab. Maggie was usually in the lower ranges, though. The accuracy of all meters is better in the low ranges. The higher you go, the further away the meters get.

The other question would be if they used the same sample of blood. Every blood sample is different and if the sample wasn't collected at exactly the same time in the same place, it won't match up.

My philosophy was always not to get hung up on a number but look at a range the number falls in. Also, I wouldn't base a change on one time - I would want to do a curve before I upped the dose.

I found that to be true when I test with the AT2, the Advocate Pet Test and the ReliOn. The higher the number, the wider the range between the meters.
