Re: Need support from you wonderful folks

We've had some folks from OH but not close enough to you I believe. I would check with the vet tech route.

        Re: Pancreas blood work

Not sure what screening they are doing. Decker had the SPEC cPL screening done in June - testing for pancreatitis. It was sent out with a bunch of other testing as a package deal.

Here are the comments that came with it:

< or = 200 ug/L - Serum Spec cPL concentration is in the normal
        range.

        201 - 399 ug/L - Serum Spec cPL concentration is increased. The
patient may have pancreatitis and serum Spec cPL
concentration should be re-evaluated. If clinical
signs are present, treat appropriately and perform
        additional diagnostics to investigate other
differential diagnoses. Repeat the Spec cPL in 1-2
weeks. If no clinical signs are present, recommend
        retesting in 3-4 weeks.

        > or = 400 ug/L - Serum Spec cPL concentration is consistent with
pancreatitis (edited as not all of my previous post had pasted when I copied and pasted).

Decker's results were 404 so it was assumed that he did experience pancreatitis though he exhibited none of the classic symptoms of it such as vomiting or diarrhea. He maintained a great appetite, temperature was normal and his heart beat was good.

He was not treated in any way for it by the vet. He was also positive for high triglycerides and hypothyroidism and my guess is that she felt that as the hypothyroidism was treated the other aliments would disappear. He is being re-tested tomorrow for a variety of things, one of them being to make sure the pancreatitis is not still present.

Re: Need support from you wonderful folks

There are lots of things you can offer to enhance the desirability of breakfast. Things that have worked for others include:
              • A dab of nonfat or lowfat cottage cheese
              • Water from a can of low-sodium tuna packed in water
              • A sprinkle of parmesan or other finely grated cheese
              • Lowfat meat like chicken or beef
              • A bit of low-sodium broth - make sure it doesn't contain onions or garlic
              • Dab of Meat baby food - I've never seen it with onions and garlic, but avoid those
              • A little canned food if feeding dry only
              • Water packed around canned low-sodium chicken
The main thing is to use as little of whatever you add as you can to get them to eat the main meail.

Things that mix in and can't be picked out are often best if they are appealing enough to the dog.

I'm sure I've forgotten some - please everybody chime in with what you have used or seen work and I will copy this information to the Answers forum for future reference.

I think I mentioned before - maybe on another thread - there are a lot of dogs who don't like to eat in the morning. Not sure why. But they never seem to want to skip dinner, only breakfast. It's not unusual. Usually they eventually adjust to eating twice a day, but there are solutions for diabetic dogs who, after reasonable efforts, just won't eat breakfast.

Re: Need support from you wonderful folks

I may have mentioned this before, but I think the non-morning eaters really need to rev their systems up. I don't eat first thing in the morning. Makes me a little nauseous. I think dogs can be the same way. So, my suggestion is exercise in the morning. Not too strenuous, but something to get the juices flowing.

I also use a topper on my dog's food. Just a tablespoon of wet mixed with her dry is enough to get her going, but she also rarely refuses to eat.

                        Happy Birthday Baxter!!!!

My dogs don't get treats during the day (usually lol)

saving a pic to my computer and uploading has worked better for me than trying to copy a link from photobucket. But I'm not real computer savvy.
