    Re: Introducing New Member

Thanks Holli your story sounds equal to about what we are going thru. My Vet call us at home this evening and the plans are to go full on with tests next week to try and get a grip on this.

      Re: Introducing New Member

You could always get the vet to do the full thyroid panel as well. Diabetes, cushings, and thyroid all share some common traits/symptoms. You might want to start with the test Holli mentioned just to see if cushings can be ruled out.

The reason I am very cautious about cushings testing is because we have seen so many false positives in this forum. The medication can cause problems if your dog doesn't actually have cushings.

The site Holli mentioned would be a great resource for you - they really know so much about the testing protocols and nuances of everything cushings. Keep us posted - I hope you get some answers very soon.

        Hi and Welcome,
This is a great place!!!! I use Levemir for Sissy. At Walmart you can buy one pen at a time, $75.00. I find it works out to be cheaper, because with a small dog, you don't use it until it is gone. I get about 50 - 55 days out of a pen, once opened.... Hope this helps... Good luck with that little guy
Sissy 13 yr old Bichon, born 4/17/03, 12 lbs. Diagnoised 7/20/12. Passed away 12/29/16 in my arms. My life will never be the same again. She will always be with me. Run free my babygirl 3 ozs I/D 4 x's day. 1.75 units levemir 2 times a day. .1 mg thyroid pill, tramadol for leg pain, morning & night,Use Alphatrak 2 and Relion Confirm meters.

Thanks to everyone on this site for all the great advice!

I dried a couple of chicken breast to the hard jerky stage yesterday. Sadie now has a small treat to look forward to in the middle of the day. She doesn't look so forlorn when I walk into the kitchen now.

Just to throw in one more thought -
You mention nerve damage in her legs. I don't know how this has manifested itself but bear in mind that they can get leg weakness due to diabetic neuropathy which goes away when they get stabilised on insulin.

(Our dog lost most of the use of his back legs and the vet assured us it was due to terminal tumours on his spine when in fact, as people on here told me, it was all due to the diabetes and it got completely better).

Ditto to Antonia's comment about the neuropathy. Charlie couldn't get up or down even one step and now can proudly tripod to pee

                  Yesterdays readings.
                  6AM 122
                  6:15 food
                  7:00 10units
                  8:00 398
                  10:00 315
                  12:30 236
                  2:00PM 274
                  4:00 196
                  6:00 325

The last reading at 6PM was a real bear to sample and could be a stress high. Her average daily BG is running right at 223 during the day. She is still eating and drinking at her correct rates. Her water is well within a normal.

She has a couple of days off from taking the curve samples to allow her to relax. She is getting a little gun shy.

Vet visit in the morning. On the discussion list other than the Diabetes, Cushings, and Thyroid testing among others.

11.5YO, 27lb mini Schnauzer newly diagnosed with Diabetes, 10 units levemir detemir 2x daily

                    A few questions:
It seems that not long ago Sadie was at 7u of levemir twice daily. Were there any curves run between 7u and 10u? How long has she been at 10u twice daily?

When you fed at 6:15a but didn't inject until 7a, was that because of the fasting number of 122 or is that delay something you always do?

Would you consider asking your vet about a fasting triglyceride test as well? I believe Sadie's breed is one that is known for having high triglyceride levels. The best way to get a true picture of where the levels are at is to have the blood draw done when the dog is fasted, as food alone can cause a temporary increase in the levels. As an FYI - You may have to adjust the insulin dose if you fast her - I'm sure the vet would give you more specifics.

                      Re: Sadie Lynn

The 3/4 hour delay has been the normal after she was put on Levemir per Vets suggestion.

Sadie has been at 10u for the last couple of weeks on vets orders after they did three days of curves and tested over 400.

I will be having a looong discussion with the vet in the morning. And triglyceride testing is on the list.

                        Re: Sadie Lynn

After a full day at the vets office, Sadie came home with a clean bill of health with the only exception of the diabetes.

NO CUSHINGS, NO HYPOTHROID, NO PANCREATITAS and no on several other tests..

A long consul with the VET went very well, with a good long term plan in place.

Looking forward to a worry free nights sleep tonight, NO CUSHINGS!!!!!!!

Thanks to all for the help.
