  • Re: Baxter had 1 year sugarversary..BUT

My Poppy went deaf during the year. She wouldn't come when we called her, she wouldn't react to hearing the front door opening. She has some high pitch hearing and can feel vibrations, and the doorbell. Her ears are fine - no wax, no infection.

She has adjusted really well. We never surprise her and as someone said, touch him before you wake him.
Poppy, 12 year old, 11.5 lb terrier x, diagnosed March 9th '12. Caninsulin: 4.5 units AM & PM. Food: 75g Hills w/d, 1/2 tsp benefiber, glucosamine/chondroitin, 1dsp ground boiled turkey breast, 1 inch piece duck jerky twice daily.

Aww Jen...I'm not sure how to answer your question. It's such an emotional and heart wrenching time. For every person it's different.

I guess for me it was...

Blind and deaf isn't a death sentence - it's typically other things that go wrong.

I believe Judi's Jenny is blind and deaf. My Soaphie is blind and is going deaf and Sydney is deaf.

Are there other medical issues going on?

I've been wondering the same thing with my Maggie. I think Mel answered well below. Maggie is blind (sees some shadows), can't hear a thing, is 14, barks at nothing inside and out, can hardly get up on the couch, can't get up on the bed, barely makes it up the stairs to go to "bed" at night, sleeps most of the time, pants a lot, has aches and pains I'm sure at her age, and has accidents in the house; but still wags her tail and yowls like mad when I come home from work, loves to eat, begs at the table, hounds for treats, and still seems to very much want to be with me. For me, time will be when she no longer enjoys any part of her life and/or when the pain or illness puts her in endless suffering (as Mel said, when I'm only keeping her here because I can't bear putting her down). Until then, I will guide her when she's in danger of running into things she can't see, be her ears as best I can, sit on the floor by her when she can't get up on the couch, walk behind her when she climbs the stairs and in front of her going down so she won't fall, enjoy having her sleep beside my bed each night, give her treats, clean up the pee and shampoo the carpet, and do my best to keep her diabetes in check. When it's clear she no longer enjoys being here.... it'll be time to say goodbye. (((Hugs)))

                              Hey Jen

Looks like you got some really good posts on how to get over this little bump in the road.

To shed alittle light and hope sometimes our daily routine isnt enough. I try to change things up abit when I feel abit down. I add a different treat, go shopping for him get a new toy, new stuffies, new bed.

He knows there just for him. Its important to give us a break once in awhile to change things up.

Your doing great Jen, you, ll get over this little bump honest!

I think you have to consider where in the process of adjusting to being blind and deaf they are. If it's early on, then a lack of response to you may not be related to how they feel but simply because they haven't worked out how to deal with the new situation yet.

I personally am much more concerned about pain than about blindness and deafness. So again, it's about why they are withdrawn and nonresponsive more than the fact that they sometimes are.

So, for example, does he perk up to the smell of something yummy?

I can tell you that as Chris got frailer his last year, he was much more withdrawn. He spent a lot more time sleeping in the back bedroom where he would normally have been out in the living area with us. And he got pickier about eating intermittently. But when he was engaged, he was there with us and seemed happy.
