i have seen this with jesse if starting with a lower fasting number she will get a spike up the lower the fasting the bigger the spike

my theory is the body needs enough blood sugar to compensate for the normal drop from injectable insulin if that cushion is not present the body can dump glucose into the system causing the higher numbers in a short amount of time taking the whole day for excess sugar to clear keeping number elevated for most of the day

this has been a problem for jesse from day one i believe her body just has poor ability to balance injectable insulin with her stored reserves of glucose the food part is not a problem but the body part is that mechanism does not really work well anymore so i have to do some things to replace that which will never be perfect replacing what a biological system could do taking thousands of years to evolve

the only way for things to work for jesse is her fasting has to be a bit higher high 100s or above below mid 100s becomes problematic most times she does not bounce into the 300s anymore her body does a bit better on that front which i guess time helped with that which there was some adaptation

so what you want to look for is that fasting number to see if you have more of a spike with lower and less with a higher fasting and if that becomes evident this is occurring you may just have to raise that fasting up to where the body is comfortable with which can be done with a late snack or some honey just something you would have to experiment with

I wonder if the new food is causing a big initial spike, then as the food leaves Baxter's system his blood sugar drops a bit in the afternoon or early am in the case of overnight.

What is the new food he's on? And what are the differences between AM and PM meals? There might not be enough fiber to carry him through the day/night.

          • can we do a poll on...

I am curious how many dogs are deemed NOT regulated
and how long they've been like that. Also were they previously
regulated and are not now? What did vets give as reasons?
            Thx jen n bax

What do YOU consider "regulated"? That would be the question.

I personally consider something like 100-225 as fairly well regulated, others might have a tighter, or looser definition of "regulation". It's impossible (for Annie) to remain within that range for more than about four days at a time. Either something happens that I can identify (visitors, unplanned snacks, baths), or just out-of-the-blue she'll throw a 300+, or 70-.

I think we try to do the best we can, but we can't control the uncontrollable.

              That's my answer.

Hi Craig. Thanks ur answer makes me feel better. Whats driving me nuts
Is the morning fastings seem ok maybe too low but during day never get same results must b the treats like u said. I don't like scary lows even tho he shows no signs low or high??
I guess I'd rather have him in 200s all day without scary lows If possible.
Do u think we should do the liver ultrasound $550 next week even tho
Enzymes n bloodwork ok? They did see rounding n a nodule on liver on abdominal xray but not sure that's what causing erratic numbers. I thought pancreas was organ for insulin.
Would l like ur thoughts anyone chime in. thx. Jen n Bax

                    Jen,

I think some of the numbers you are seeing might be due to the fact he is eating what seems like totally opposite diets morning and night. I think you might get better results with two similar foods at both meals. I understand picky -I have a super picky eater myself. I have found that I can give her the same dry(Nutrisca) at both meals and switch out either Merrick canned or Grandma Lucy's Pure Performance and get almost identical results. Maybe get some different flavors of the same brand to keep Baxter interested. Or find a different brand with ingredients that are really close to alternate. If he was a human, it is almost like he is getting salad for one meal and pizza/pasta at the other. JMO on that.

Has he been on eight units consistently or do you adjust that dose most days based on the lows or do you adjust based on the amount he eats? I am sorry to ask questions but I am trying to wrap my head around it all. Since you are changing food to that Natures Variety, it is not a good time to change anything insulin wise.

Ditto! Jake will be in a very good range and then out of the blue run high or suddenly drop. I don't think he will ever be in a perfect range that I can say he is regulated. I just do the best I can on each day.

                          Jen,
What's the background behind his last couple of days? Have his meals changed again? Insulin dose? Exercise or lack of? All of these can have an effect.

I wouldn't consider 1 day of higher numbers an emergency. You can get back on track with the next dose.

I agree with Amy on the difference in his AM/PM meals. He's had a lot of inconsistencies lately. My goal would be to find an insulin dose you can stick with that doesn't produce any lows requiring intervention, and to try to make his meals more equal with regard to carbs, fiber, etc as Amy indicated. Sandy does this as well with Tiggy - rotating through similar canned foods and keeping the rest the same to try to appease her picky eater.

Do you have food/bgs/insulin dose entries you could post here for the last few days?

Ditto with spirit.....regulated is a tricky term since each dog is different and environment on any given day can have an effect. Most of the time Spirit is between 100-230 or so....walks can change that, a visit with the dog next door can have an affect also. Spirit can also throw some very low numbers with no noticeable changes in his demeanor. He's been as low as 50 and still walking around like normal. He can also get highs in the upper 200's and low 300's with no change. For us regulation is achieved if he is active, happy, eating, walking, playing ect.....All we can do is the best we can do

I could only get about thirty days out of Humulin. So, why aren't you buying Novolin at Wal Mart for $23.88 a bottle? There is such a small difference in the two and I get 40-45 days out of Novolin. Save those $$$.
