  • Re: Baxter needs your insight

    Hi Craig,
thanks for the insight, and sorry about the finger arthritis LOL. I know you have a life outside the forum What you said makes sense, we had to wait to feed and inject because I was so excited to see a number in high 100s. we had to call vet and make sure dosing the same..he was 282 fasting bg earlier this week before the dose change. Wanted to make sure nothing funky going on..vet was very excited and said keep doing the saeme thing. we took another reading at 4pm and he was 294 hey it has a "2" at the beginning at least it's not a 4! Thanks enjoy the weekend .Jen, Damon and Baxter

Yea!!! A 2xx reading. Let's see what the next one, or the fasting one before dinner reads

My wife, Linda, says my life revolves around Annie, and I do enjoy talking with others here on the forum about our "kids".

      Keep up the good work!

      • update to Craig

Hi so bax spent a few hours with my parents at their house they gave him 5 grilled chicken cubes
and 1/2 alpo snap at 6:30pm. His 8:30 pre meal read was 401.
It seems bax does better processing insulin overnite it seems to wear off
        during day???

Of course I was hoping Baxter would have come down instead of rising 100 points.

I don't know if you are thinking about raising the dosage tomorrow, but looks like a 1/2 unit increase could be handled?

One other thought is that his visit with his grandparents could have (don't know, but COULD have) raised his BGs. Example: most Thursdays we pup sit our son's two dogs. Annie basically tries to ignore them, but they are young and want to play! The Thursday evening blood test is usually higher than other days. My theory is that she gets slightly excited during the day and "uses-up" the insulin, then goes a bit higher in the late afternoon due to the lack of insulin. Well, it's my theory!

You really have to be a detective. Then there are times when I see highs, or lows, for no reason.

Almost time to get Annie ready for her evening routine. Might be interesting because we had our 3 year old grandson for a few hours. Annie ignores him also, but it's hard to get out of the way of an active 3 year old!

Hi Craig. Yes maybe baxs grandparents chicken fest raised bg. We did get a 170 this morning.good i.think?? again insulin working well overnite. Kind of strange numbers during day. So I'm thinking he is not insulin resistant? Just that he better uses insulin at night? If u do mini curve what are key times to check? Thx the high cholester may b the culprit but vet stumped as to why he woukd drop first hour after injection and he's not doing that anymore??? Thx Jen n Baxter

Nice 170 this morning! No, Baxter is definitely not insulin resistant!

Most consider a "curve" as testing every 2 hours, and would probably show when BG movements occur. My "mini curves" are tests at either 3 or 4 hour intervals. Not quite as easy to determine when / why BG movements occur, but saves a few strips and permits trips away from the house!

Guess dogs use the insulin in their own individual way. You say Baxter uses his insulin better overnight, but it might be because there are no treats overnight?

BTW, recall I mentioned the grandson was with us yesterday afternoon and I thought Annie's reading might be a bit higher? She was 301 at 7:30 last night, but is back to 200 this morning at 7:30.

                    Pups can be soooo considerate!

We (Annie) went a different route. She helped us pull up all the carpet from the living room, family room and main hallway and replaced with Pergo fake wood. Actually I can't blame Annie for the soiling of the carpet. We actually replaced the carpet due to the "great flood of 2005". This was when I accidentally dumped about 50 gallons of salt water aquarium water into the family room and had a minor tsunami down the hallway! Good thing it was fresh salt water, and not "used" water out of the aquarium.

Remind me what meter you are using? 79 is a bit low, maybe Two or three of those snacks you have given, or have Baxter visit his grandparents!

Chances are food will take 30+ minutes to make any difference. If you think he is going into the 60s, you might smear one of those treats with a bit of honey or corn syrup.

                        Keep us informed.

Now that Baxter is getting down into a good range (fingers crossed) lets talk about meals. Are you using measuring cups, or a scale? I've been using a scale, about $25 at Target / Walmart, for several years. I discovered that measuring cups just wasn't accurate enough for Annie. Of course Baxter is a larger pup and food amount might not be as critical?

This is the one I have:

Honey should work within just a minute or two. Maybe give the honey / treat 5 minutes before you test. You gave a snack about 40 minutes ago, and another treat with honey just a few minutes ago?

If he is still dropping, say 65ish, you might give a bit more honey. Better safe than sorry, but you don't want to over react either! Hard to judge
