      • Liver ultrasound for Bax? need help with decision please

        Hi everyone,
So, we need to decide if we should do the $650 liver ultrasound for Baxter.
His curves have been not perfect , i just got additional opinions from other vets, and they didn't seem too bothered by his last curve. When I explained that my normal vet did abdominal xrays and saw nothing, and then sent them for interpretation by radiology $180!! and the radiologist found "rounding of back of liver and a nodule" and she keeps pushing for ultrasound..we can handle it financially, i just don't know if i want to know if something is really bad. It seems like something would be off if he had cancer or something???
his bloodwork all good, no elevated liver enzymes, just slightly elevated cholesterol his appetite good, weight stable, no excessive thirst or urination..he seems so happy good energy, so I gotta ask
has anyone had a liver ultrasound done for their pup??? Please help us decide...we are so stressed by this. Thanks, Jen and Baxter

Hi Jen, Here is the way I decide these things. I have a thorough discussion with the vet and break it down into steps.

1st question would be what are the possible things they would find.

2nd question for each of those things would be what would prognosis for each of these possibilities.

3rd what would be the eatment for each possibiltity.

For discussions like these I always schedule an appt. instead of catching the doctor on the phone as running through eaxh scenario can take some time. Some doctors are better then others at thinking through each stage of the process.

I just like to have an idea where we are possibly heading before putting the dog and the wallet through a lot.

          Hope this helps, Tara

Happy Sugaranniversary to Baxter, and to you for taking wonderful care of him.

Was he having any symptons before he went deaf. I know that sometimes I think Abby is deaf.... but I think it is selective hearing.

oh poor Baxter. I think deafness is much harder for them to adjust to than blindness.

I thought Jenny went deaf last fall. She couldn't hear anything. During her dental I asked them to carefully check her ears and they told me there was no infection.

Due to her dental procedure she was on antibiotics for almost a month and it cleared something up. She has some hearing now. Not a lot but a little.

I hope the same happens for Baxter.

I would flash lights to wake her and thump the floor next to her bed. She feels vibrations. I'm so sorry. hugs, Judi

congrats on your 1 year anniversary, you have worked real hard with Baxter

I was just googling hearing loss and found wax build up due to the hair around cockapoos ears can cause hearing loss because of the narrow ear canal.

they say to teach hand signals.

Congratulations to you and Baxter on your one year anniversary! Loved the pictures - he is a cutie!

Sorry to hear about the deafness. My non -diabetic dog seems to be losing his hearing. He's always been a bit selective but the signs we are seeing now are pointing more towards loss of hearing rather than lack of desire to respond.

I'm sorry to read about Baxter's latest battle, but I wanted to say, I've know a few dogs and cats that have been deaf and they adjust. It's us that have a hard time because we continue to talk to them or call them! I would definitely have him checked by the vet, but don't despair!

My Sydney is deaf. Couple tips - gently awake them (slight touch), as they can startle easy. Keep them safe in a fenced yard or on leash. Eye contact is really important so they know what's what. Also, perhaps Baxter already knows hand signals for "sit" or "lay down" etc?

Sorry about Baxter's deafness. Given how sudden it is I would think it is well worth getting it checked out in case it is something simple like wax. (If beach trip was recent might it be something to do with water in the ear?)

One of our dogs who we think is quite old has gone deaf (slowly, not suddenly). He does cope ok and responds to loud claps and hand signals eg beckoning to recall. It's just a bit of a pain late at night when he vanishes into the darkness and you can't summon him back to the house so you just have to wait till he feels like coming back....

He stays very cheerful - one of the happiest dogs I have known, tail always up in the air wagging and the deafness doesn't seem to trouble him at all.

Happy Sugarversary!! Truly a good feeling!!

I agree that with the sudden onset of deafness a trip to the vet is in order. Diabetes causes a lot of problems, but hearing loss is not one of them

Hopefully it's something simple like others have suggested
