Chuck-108 lb male Rottweiler, 8 years old. Dx Sept. 24, 2014. 22.5 units of Novolin N 2 x a day. Alpha Track 2. 2 1/2 cup Purina OM Select Blend, 2 x a day. Also mom to 2 Boxer boys, I love my 3 boys-chucksmom aka Kim
I,m thinking she,s getting too much insulin. 0.125 per kg is the recommended dose being 12 kg x 0.125 is 1.5 units of levemir. all dogs are different. I would be decreasing with those low numbers. 8 units seems shes rising more from the 7 units.

20 lb male. 5 1/2 nph insulin. 1/2 cup fromms. black cockapoo, dx Apr 2012 . 5 1\2 yrs diabetic. 2000 to 2017
I,m thinking she,s getting too much insulin. Looks like you had a symogi rebound. 483 to drop to 85 is alot.

Not sure of the translation, But I've been using the .25 unit per lb. as a starting point for the levemir and at 29.3 lbs this gives 7.1 units. She has been holding steady at the dosage until just the other day.
Vet appointment this week So this will be on my talking list.

levemir is 4 times as potent as NPH . so a 4 unit dose of n insulin would be comparable to 1 unit of levemir. so a starting dose would be much smaller on levemir compared to NPH or vetsulin

Everything on the 30th was higher so not necessarily a rebound... I find that rebounding is not all that common. More likely either her blood sugar was being pushed higher by something or the insulin got stuck somewhere or didn't get absorbed.
In general, I feel that 7 units is too much, at least on some days. I would go down at least 1 full unit and see how she does on that.
Considering that she got sick, I was not surprised at the drop. She just didn't have as much food working with her insulin.
I think, though, I might be inclined to drop her a unit. Although she has had very good blood sugar, it is incredibly hard to account for things like her throwing up or excessive playing and I would like more leeway so there is no worry. I tried for quite some time to walk the line with Maggie like that and I really believe that she is in better shape now than when I had such standards for her blood sugar management. I know we are both happier - maintenance is such a full time job.

As back ground Sadie would not react to other insulin types So she was put on 10 units of Levemir. She stayed at steady readings of over 400 for some weeks then as she improved was taken down to 5units and slowly upped to 7 with several ups and downs along the way.
We have our vet visit on Thursday so I'm holding off changes until then.
As is my normal, after injecting Sadie I rub the area with my palm.
Tonight for the first time I came up with a bloody palm. I'm not sure if I got the insulin in, but the blood did come from the injection site. The needle was not bent upon removal.
Looks like I'm taking BG readings tonight!
Your thoughts.

probably hit a blood vessel . yes you do want to monitor tonight . if the insulin penetrated the blood stream it can work much faster than normal . more than likely thats not the case it would take a perfect scenario but we cant take anything for granted

I have had the issue from time to time with Maggie. I don't know if some dogs just are more prone to it - kind of like some people just bleed easier. I always test more because it is frightening but it has never affected her blood sugar. But, others have seen lows if injected directly into bloodstream. Fingers and paws crossed that everything will be normal.
