I'm really happy to hear this news. It's great when their legs start working again!
(I remember how we celebrated the first time Eddie lifted his leg to pee again ... though you won't get that particular milestone with a girl!)

That is great news! So glad to hear she is getting better! I know when Chuck got better, I cut his Rimadyl dose in half. Now that we are 5 months in and mostly regulated, he doesn't take any Rimadyl and I am THRILLED! lol
To us, the little things are not so little

Laura & Charlie 29 lb male lhasapoo diagnosed October 2013. 16ish units of Novolin N. 1 & 1/3 cup of Natural Balance Fat Dog twice a day. An egg with breakfast and chicken with dinner. Shares string cheese with us late afternoon. Cyclosporine ointment for KCS. Blind from cataracts January 2014. Crossed the rainbow bridge 2/1/2016 at 14.5 years
Lets see if I can explain this with out going over board.
Sadie’s curves go something like this: 5AM fast 90, 8AM 110, 10AM 130, 12Noon 150, 2PM 145, 4PM 330 then at 5PM 345. She receives 8 units of levemir morning and night.
It’s the jump in the afternoon that I am working on. She gets only frozen green beans for snacks and those are very limited. I do not wish to increase the morning injection as I fear it will drive her numbers too low in the morning. I am thinking of giving her a 1 unit injection at 3PM and only a 7 unit at the evening feed.
Thoughts?

I realize every dog is different, and their response to various insulins might be different than what "the book" states for humans. Levemir is suppose to be a long lasting insulin with a 2-4 hour onset? If that is true for Sadie Lynn, I wonder what a tiny increase in the morning dosage might do? Of course you would want to do this on a curve day to be sure she doesn't have a much quicker than normal onset.
Your thought about a small dosage at 3PM could be tried, but I'm still wondering about the "indicated" 2-4 hour onset (in humans).

Continued thought.......
Or have you determined the levemir has a fast onset in Sadie?

Have you considered adding a more robust snack to prolong the insulin midday ? I seem to remember that people have used it as a method to prolong the insulin. It might seem counterintuitive and may not be a solution for Sadie. I have learned with diabetes that trial and error is how we figure our individual dogs out. Just an idea....may not work.

i might consider r insulin for spikes . i have used nph but i new it wasnt appropriate because of the potential for overlap . the most important thing when preempting a spike you better know it happens day in day out
we have went down this road with jesse with giving shots out of sequence in her early days i thought it was appropriate because how high she went . as the numbers came down and became more stable we stopped that procedure . for me at that early time i was not regulating her
sometimes spikes happen and there may not be allot you can do . sometimes this is just how the body balances injected insulin . i believe its not a food issue . its just how the body responds .
my jesse if higher at shot time will drop if lower she will rise . its just how her body interprets the dosage and where her blood sugar is and responds to preserve life
for jesse altering something at one time ussually shows up in another time
for jesse she has her spikes but they have been greatly reduced and time took care of that
its possible an early afternoon snack maybe helpful and that may not include a low glycemic food we use a milk bone which keeps jesses numbers more stable . maybe the body recognizes this digestible sugar and the body doesnt have that same response
of coarse this is all hypothetical . sugar is sugar we cant determine where it comes from. it would be nice if we could

A lot to think about here.... The only thing to do is print off your replies and go to the bakery... large coffee with double sugar and a big super bear claw, sit and read.
