Do you think the other meds might not "play nice" with diabetes? I looked up carprofen and thyrovet and they both have cautions concerning diabetes. I realize Sadie Lynn has other problems, but might they be making her regulation difficult? Don't know.

Is your vet a specialist?

I agree with both jessegirl and Craig with their ideas of what could be some possibilities so the meds and rebound are something to consider. Are all of those meds required? That tramadol dose seems like a big amount - is she in that much pain to require that dose? Pain can cause a great deal of numbers bouncing around. I think to figure this out, you will have to examine everything and question it whether it is food, medicine, insulin. Of course, you can't change everything at once - you might want to look at rebound first to rule it out.

I am wondering if maybe you could go back and try nph or vetsulin now. I know it was tried in the beginning but things are different now. I don't feel like the vets gave those insulins much of a chance in the beginning because Sadie was put on levemir pretty quickly. Her body could be in a different place now.

The chart was a little too blurred to read the numbers, but the shape of the curves were interesting. Did you do anything (fed anything) at around the lowest point? Wonder why the last several hours was almost straight up?

If I remember correctly with the levemir I was able to reduce decker's food and it helped reduce that post 2p spike. We weighed his food on a kitchen scale and reduced by a couple of ounces. He was hypothyroid and a tad overweight so the reduction was not a big deal for him.

The other thing I'd do on occasion, more as a corrective measure, was to give him .5u of insulin an hour or two after his meal dose. It would create a bit of overlap to help keep that spike at bay when we gave decker a bone or some other 'forbidden' food when we knew his spinal compression was progressing and his time was limited.

i,m seeing a pattern of higher numbers in the afternoon and 6pm fasting going back to upping the dose from 5 units to 6. same thing up to now at 11 units higher numbers the highest they,ve been so far. 5 units was working. i think it will still work. i,d drop back and hold for at least 2 weeks

those numbers look pretty good and something most would be happy with

its funny where the 2 fastings end up to be about the same which can be quite normal for dogs with regulation that is quite consistent

I agree with all... if those numbers were norm I would be dancing around the room..

So you have a real pain and make an appointment to see the Doctor, you wake up that morning and guess what.....

You have a car that has never failed to start and you advertise it that way, the first customer comes along and guess what happens when you try to start the .......

Sunday is another full curve day and we shall see what we shall see....

ha ha ha. you are so right

some folks around here have managed tighter control than others. My dog was older and had multiple issues so I eventually decided if she was playing, eating and happy, I was not going to sweat if her curve was in the 280's vs. the 180's.

Sadie just isn't going to let you relax, is she?

I know it is frustrating. Some dogs may not get to tight regulation ever but they still lead full lives. I would continue to tweak and try different things - you never know when one little part of routine might make a difference.
